Among sports fans, the term GOAT means Greatest of All Time.
----
The GOAT discussion comes up here because a player in the National Basketball Association has been dazzling the league and its fans with the greatest month of shooting the ball in the history of the sport.
The Golden State Warriors -- lacking the departed Kevin Durant and the long-injured Klay Thompson who helped power their championship years -- were languishing well below .500 until the magical outside shooting of Steph Curry brought them back to even this week. Curry staged a personal 20-point fourth quarter against the NBA powerhouse Philadelphia 76ers and their MVP candidate Joel Embiid to accomplish that result.
Curry, now 33, has been routinely bucketing 10 three-pointers a game and between 40 and 50 points a game this month (April 2021). As the greatest three-point shooter in history and the NBA's current scoring leader, he knew his team's predicament and has taken over games as needed with his ability to shake defenders and drain shots from well past the three-point line.
Curry also has unique abilities to move without the ball .. split double-teams .. and fake out defenders despite his small size (six-foot-three is small for NBA stars!) for layups and creative scoring moves around the hoop.
He acknowledges that his play this month has statistically been the best for any 10-game stretch in his career.
Curry's Warriors, whose arena is now in San Francisco, are back-of-the-pack amongst teams that would qualify for the playoffs if the season ended now. The actual playoffs will begin in mid-May with novel play-in series. Curry has his team poised to move up in the standings and make a dent in the post-season due to his spectacular scoring run.
