What to expect when moving to Zambia

Hello everyone,

Is there anything you wish you had known before moving to Zambia? For example, transportation, internet speeds, types of housing, aspects of the culture or social life.

In your opinion, what's the most important thing to know about Zambia?

When would you recommend someone should begin planning their move to Zambia?

What were the most helpful ways you found to get organised? For example, did you use a checklist, were there any particularly useful websites or apps?

What advice would you give to future expats preparing to move to Zambia?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Priscilla

Zambia is a lovely country with Christian population. Currently the wether is summer and this will continue for another month and half before the rains start. Many places the internet is fiber, also service providers like Zamtel , MTN, Airtel and Vodaphone have their operations .

Country also has good network of banks to name few are standard chartered,Citibank, stanbic bank, FNB, Barclays etc.
The school starts from August the international schools but the government schools start from September. Few good schools are ISL, American international, And many more
The houses mainly are individual houses in yards and also some places you find flats but limited. The rental stats from 500$ to upwards 3000$ depends on the location. Expat stay in many locations like kabulonga, Roma, mass media, Olympia, makeni, Lepord hill, Salama park but best suggestion is to stay in a closed yard with some houses for safety reasons. Zambia has a rich wild life with many attractions. The longest water fall Victoria falls is located in livingstone. There are around 7-8 malls and many more on their ways, you find all your requirements in zambia but some time for clothing we have limited selections. Roads are paved and nicely maintained, the vehicle are right hand drive, you need to have your own vehicle to communicate but also depends on your necessity. There are plenty of fuel stations across the country and never had issues of fuel crises in this country. Many airlines have operations like Emirates, Ethiopian, South African, Kenyan and Rwanda. The country has domestic airlines which cover major town in zambia. The country economy is mainly drives by commodity which is copper.
The capital city is Lusaka and has many. Ice lodges and star hotelsto name few are raddison blue , intercontinental and Taj. The country also has local transport like taxi and mini bus. If any thing more you want let me know.

Moving to Zambia can be an easy transition. All business is done in English and most people speak at least basic English. Housing is available in many options however if someone owns there own property then that makes things much easier. It is recommended that you probably chose a new rental property instead of an older house unless it is well maintained. Also when signing rental agreement see that your landlord has a 3 month notice period for you and you have a 30 day notice for them. This way you can leave at short notice if they don't maintain the property or if you don't like the area etc but the 3 month notice from them will protect you from them asking you to leave at very short notice. This happens so take this advise wisely.
Lusaka is probably first city of choice however the Copperbelt and livingstone have some nice options.
Schools are plenty however private schools are best suited to children from other better developed countries.
People are very friendly and the country has many options for shopping.
People looking to invest specially in copperbelt can look into tourism sector and property as both can do with additional investment.
Residence permits are easy obtained for the following persons: children irregardless of age of any Zambian person, grandchildren of any Zambian person under the age of 18. Retirees of any age as long as they have a retirement income this includes early retirement persons. Spouses of Zambians do get residency however are not permitted to work until after 5 years. A way around this is to opt for an invester permit which requires a $250,000 investment.
All in all the middle class in Zambia live a very good standard of life providing you can maintain an income in excess of $600 for a single person $1000 as a couple and at least $2000 for a small family. Amenities such as satellite TV options start at $8 to $90 for full packages. Internet starts at $15 to $50 per month, cellphone credit on average $15 to $35 per month. Maid service from $50 to $90 per month full time working 6 days a week. Remember to pay pension contributions for your employees it's 5% deduction and 5% contribution from you the employee. Electricity $50 to $90 per month dependent on usage I'm more $90 per month for a 4 bed house with 3 kids who are constantly on video games. Water is cheap however if possible go for private water supply i.e. Borehole as the quality of water is better and council water tends to be less reliable.
Boiling water is advised and saves having to buy bottled water.
A gardener is probably best kept as part time ir 3 to 4 days a week and won't cost you more than $40 a month.
School can cost anything from $100 to $2000 per term for private schools.
Good luck to everyone moving and please think through every option. Family members are full of advise however look at the person giving the advise before taking it.

Thanks for this comprehensive information.
