Relocating from U.K. 1 dog (air transport agents)

We moved last March from the UK and used petcouriers near Gatwick and they arranged everything and petrelocations here in Mauritius who took care of the permit and quarantine. It is part of the permit that the dog travels direct .Hope this helps ,we live in the North West at Mont Choisy.

I am also relocating to Mauritius from the UK, and we've got a lovely family dog, I emailed pet import who gave me a long list of vaccines and tests to be done. Can I have more info on what you did for your dog as well as the name of the courier used. Because of the pandemic, they've asked us to get a cargo...what difference does it make? I see that in the hold is 3 times cheaper, so some more info about it would be welcome. Many thanks.

I emailed the petimport Mauritius and here's what they've asked for:

Dear Sir/ madam,
Please note that the following are required for import of dogs/cats:
Application needs to be made on ​separate sheets for each animal.
Motivation letter from owner (all letters should be addressed to the Acting Principal Veterinary Officer).
Residence Permit/ Occupation Permit/ Passport of owner
Vaccination book of both animals (from front cover up to latest vaccines including rabies vaccine)
Rabies test for the animals to be done at least one month after Rabies vaccine (using method: Fluorescent Antibody Virus Neutralisation test or rapid fluorescent focus inhibition test) done in  a laboratory approved by the government veterinary authorities of the exporting country (as per new import permit conditions- attestation to be sent along with test results) OR an OIE Reference laboratory for Rabies.
For dogs (in addition to the above):
Brucella Canis test (method to be used: Microscopic Agglutination test, Rapid Slide Agglutination, Tube Agglutination)
Ehrlichia Canis test to be done within 45 days prior to arrival (method to be used: Indirect Fluorescent Antibody Test)

​Complete applications along with ALL required documents should be submitted together, following which application will be valid for ONLY 45 days.


Please see below an extract of the new import permit conditions which need to be respected:

"1.The dog/cat showed no clinical signs of  Rabies and other infectious diseases the day prior to shipment or on the day of shipment .

AND EITHER

a)      The dog/cat was vaccinated or revaccinated in accordance with the recommendations of the manufacturer, with a vaccine that was produced in accordance with the Terrestrial Manual and;

b)      was subjected not less than 3 months and not more than 12 months prior to shipment to an antibody titration test as prescribed in the Terrestrial Manual with a positive result of at least 0.5 IU/ml in a laboratory approved by the government veterinary authorities of the exporting country.

OR

was kept in an approved quarantine station for six months prior to shipment under supervision of Veterinary Authority of your exporting country."


Please note the following for the arrival procedure:
Once the import permit is granted (provided all conditions are met), someone has to come and collect same at our office at Reduit. A payment of Rs 500 per animal and Rs 500 for veterinary clearance is payable during collection of import permit.
When the animal comes to Mauritius, it must be accompanied by all the original documents including an INTERNATIONAL VETERINARY HEALTH CERTIFICATE issued by the STATE VETERINARIAN of the exporting country.
Please also note that the animal will undergo a quarantine of 5 days or one month only (depending on country of export) at the Livestock and Veterinary Division Quarantine Facility at Reduit. After this someone has to collect the animal. Kindly send us a letter of authorisation mentioning the collector's name and Identity Card and stating that the person will collect the animal after the 5 days or one month are over (if you are not able to do so).
Due to Covid-19 situation worldwide, all animals must come by CARGO ONLY (NOT in cabin and NOT in luggage hold as excess luggage). Thus, you will have to find a broker for the clearance.
Please inform us of flight details at least four days prior to arrival once permit is granted.
No transit en route is allowed.
Quarantine fees is of Rs 15 per day per animal.

cost-wise, there is an estimate of about Rs 50 000 for 1 animal to Rs 100 000 for 3 animals !

Thank you for your response. I did call them and no-one answered and I think I read some really bad reviews about their lack of communication etc.

I have just come back to this post, as now Covid is calming down (I think!!!!) I am working on my plans to hopefully aim to come to Mauritius this October. Thank you so much for taking the time to posts all those links.

It states that the quarantine is 5 days to 30 days - depending on the origin country

For those who Brough dogs specifically direct from the UK, was their quarantine 5 days only? Or 30 days? Or somewhere in between?

Since the UK has virtually non existent rabies issues I would *think* it would be 5 days only?

I have been looking to move from the UK. I have a small dog and have looked on the British Airways website for pet transport. They recommend a company called PetAir UK. It seems they make all the arrangements from the UK end and also contacts from the Mauritius side to make sure all the paperwork is done properly and pets are transported safely.

I find them to be very expensive.

just to let you know, we're now partnering with a company specialized in pets relocation in Mauritius (they are based in the south of the island)

@parsonsanne59 not yet. I am going in the middle of May for at least 6 months. My wife is still undecided, so she will come for a couple of weeks later in th eyear to see what living there is like. If she then decides t move, I will be arranging pet transport etc. It takes time for all the vaccine requirements. I trust British Airways so will be looking for non-stop flights from Heathrow to Mauritius -- it is still a 12 hr flight and my wife is worried. It would be ideal if she could take the dog in the cabin, but sad I did not win the lottery last night to be able to afford a private jet.

@Tookays I'm wanting to bring my little dog with me to Mauritius for 5 or 6 months and then come back to London with him. I am hoping for October. I'd be really keen to hear how you get on if your wife does decide to join you with your dog. I started research before Covid and for various reasons couldn't make it happen last year. I feel I have to go back to the drawing board and start all over again...

@Sirvannah my dog is going to be 8 years old and is a little jumpy at times. I have no worries about transporting him to Mauritius now, but I am not thinking of bringing him back to UK if I do move. The weather will be hot for him, and he will need close grooming and a swimming pool and airconditioning, but he will be ok. My wife, on the other hand..............

Do you know the pet couriers you will use? I would appreciate you keeping me posted if you do relocate your dog. I am wanting to take my dog Benji for 5 or 6 months to Mauritius just to check out 100% if we want to relocate there for good. In my heart I really want to make it happen, but it makes sense to do a recce first.

@Sirvannah your location seems to be in Mauritius already! When was the last time you visited Mauritius, and for how long?  If you will be happy living in Mauritius, so will your dog. What breed is Benji?

Welcome to your nightmare if you bring a dog here.  I bought two and lost one soon afterwards. The quarantine system is really bad and the best way is to pay for service or else your dog has a really bad stay, be prepared to visit your pet daily and make sure he is looked after with your funds to staff.  Insist on a covered area completely, which you again pay for.

I went through this with two dogs from the USA. best person with lots of experience is Hanna Kootbally. +230 57979027 Relocation and Consulting services. Grand Baie for two dogs she cost 26,700 Rs. Local currency.

@anne8639 so sorry you lost one of your dogs. I have looked at quarantine facilities and obviously am willing to pay for enhanced care. I think it is only 5 days if travelling from the UK. We will visit daily for as long as possible, bring food along etc.

@Tookays Hi thanks for your message. I did wonder why my location shows Grande Baie already. I think it asked me my area of interest and then it looks as if I am already there....thats the way to manifest anyway!!!!!

I visited only once in 2017 and stayed with dear friends in Pointe aux Cannoniers just for 3 weeks, but it felt completely like home. I spent 25 years visiting Barbados with a view to settling there about my age now, but fell out of love with it. Mauritius is a million percent more superior in my opinion, so I think I will be fine. I will soon know after spending several months there... hopefully this Winter.

Benji is a chunky Chihuahua with the sweetest most chilled out temperament. What breed is yours?
