Hi! My name is Diana, I am from Mexico moved abroad thanks to a scholarship my husband received to study his masters over here.
When and how did you decide to move to Germany? Is it complicated to settle down there?
In 2012, my husband applied for a scholarship to do his masters over here (for the second time) and he got accepted, a month after I finished my bachelors, we packed our bags said our goodbyes and moved to Hamburg. My husband came two weeks before us to find an apartment, so that he had everything ready to go once we arrived. I'd say it wasn't difficult to settle down here since we had everything ready by the time we got here.
Have you ever lived abroad before?
Nope, this is my first time.
How many countries have you visited?
Since being in Europe we have visited seven countries: Germany, Holland, Czech Republic, Sweden, Italy, UK, and France.
What do you like the most about Germany?
The security. It is way better than it is in Mexico, even with the refugees here.
How was the cultural shock? What are the main differences with Mexico, your home country?
The biggest one would be that the stores are closed on Sundays, and the size of the fridge, we were used to having a nice, big fridge and going to the store whenever we felt like it. Now we can't go after 8 or on Sunday. :/
Do you miss anything from your homeland?
The two things I miss the most are my family and the food.
Any 'memories of an expat' you would like to share with us? Your best souvenir? Or maybe your worst experience?
During my time here I've been collecting post cards, it's something simple that I can take with me wherever I go.
What does your typical day as an expat in Germany look like?
As a mom my day revolves around my daughters', but I include some me time too. I wake up prepare her breakfast take her to school then I go to my German class, after that I meet up with friends or go home until it's time to pick her up again. We come home I make lunch and we spend the afternoon at home.
When did you start your blog? For what reasons?
While I was doing an internship they made us do a mock blog, so I did one and decided I'd like to create one for me, as a sort of memoir of our time here.
Did you make new friends with your blog?
I joined in on a certain link up and met other expats, although, I haven't met anyone irl yet.
Why did you register on https://www.expat.com and what do you think of the website?
I thought it would be a nice way of meeting other bloggers in the same niche. I really like the website.
Which advice would you give to the other Expat.com members who would like to settle in Germany?
Definitely do it sooner rather than later, it's a great experience, I can't believe I didn't do it sooner.
