Tiruye ESD

Coaches

I facilitate Empowerment Self-Defense workshops and trainings for orgnizations, individuals and women and children to prevent sexual and gender-based violence.

My company is a Private Limited Company and I work in partnership or consultation format for those who are interested to work with me.

The purpose of my work is training women and children, corporate staff and anyone interested to learn about an Empowerment Self-Defense to prevent SGBV. I am currently in Kenya but I'd love to work with orgnizations outside of Kenya as well.

About what I do. So what is Empowerment self-defense (ESD)? ESD training encompasses a comprehensive approach that equips individuals with mental, verbal, and physical skills to effectively protect themselves from potential threats of assault. From identifying various forms of assault to practicing assertive communication and physical defense techniques, the training is designed to instill confidence and promote personal safety.

ESD is all about empowering women and girls to protect themselves from any form of assault. It's not just about physical moves, it's also about mental and verbal skills that help boost their confidence and assertiveness. With these skills, they can defend themselves and escape dangerous situations.

Now, why is empowerment self-defense so important? Well, let me tell you a few reasons:

1. Promotes Agency: It gives individuals the power to set boundaries, make informed decisions, and take control of their own safety.

2. Builds Confidence: By learning practical skills and strategies, individuals gain confidence in their ability to protect themselves. And trust me, confidence is a game-changer. It can boost overall well-being and self-esteem.

3. Reduces Victimization: Empowerment self-defense equips individuals with tools to recognize and respond to potentially dangerous situations. It basically reduces their vulnerability to violence. Who doesn't want that?

4. Fosters Community Support: It's not just about individual empowerment, it's also about building a strong community. Empowerment self-defense encourages bystander intervention and collective action against violence. We're all in this together!

Now, let's dive into what the ESD skills training covers:

1. Awareness Training: Participants learn how to spot potential threats, understand the patterns attackers use to choose their victims, and trust their gut instincts. Intuition is key!

2. Assertiveness Training and Practice: It's all about teaching individuals how to confidently assert themselves and set boundaries in different situations. No more being a pushover!

3. Verbal De-escalation and Negotiation: Participants learn techniques to defuse potentially violent situations using de-escalation skills and assertive language. We're talking real-life scenario practices here.

4. Physical Techniques: This is where things get physical (in a good way). Participants are taught basic self-defense moves like strikes, kicks, and getting out of grabs or holds. Of course, the techniques are tailored to each person's physical abilities.

5. Scenario Training: It's all about putting those learned skills into action. Participants practice how to respond in simulated attack scenarios. Trust me, this builds confidence like nothing else.

6. Understanding the Law: Participants get a crash course on their legal rights and responsibilities when it comes to self-defense. They learn when they can use force and how to report incidents. Knowledge is power!

7. Safety Strategies: This is all about staying safe in different environments. Think walking alone, using public transportation, or hanging out with friends. Gotta be prepared!

8. Emotional and Psychological Resilience: We can't forget about the emotional side of things. Participants learn how to build resilience and cope with fear, stress, and trauma that may come from potential threats or past experiences. It's all about taking care of yourself.

Throughout the class, the focus is on empowerment, self-confidence, and the belief that every individual has the right to defend themselves if necessary. Instructors create a supportive and non-judgmental environment where participants feel comfortable asking questions
