Ethiopian Meskel; the Finding of True Cross /Demera/ Boom Fire
Finding of the True Cross “Mesekl” the festival is celebrated for two days beginning September 27th. Ethiopia Meskel celebration is an annual most important religious holiday in the Ethiopian Orthodox church calendar which is held to commemorate the supposed discovery of the True Cross largely because it’s believed that a piece of the cross Saint Helena discovered was brought to Ethiopia.
According to local traditions, this Demera-procession takes place in the early evening the day before Meskel or on the day itself. The firewood is decorated with daisies before the celebration. Charcoal from the remains of the fire is afterward collected and used by the faithful to mark their foreheads with the shape of a cross.
