After Czech pianist Daniel Bulatkin’s sold-out 2022 album launch at PizzaExpress with saxophonist Tom Smith and their project Drifter Days, he returns with an exciting new venture: the Herak/Bulatkin Quartet. This electrifying ensemble brings together four distinct musical voices, flourishing within the vibrant Dutch music scene. Co-led by the extraordinary vibraphonist Miro Herak, the quartet draws inspiration from a rich tapestry of influences, blending original compositions with a deep connection to Slavic heritage and Central/Eastern European folk traditions. Their latest recording, The Simple Things, featuring the legendary saxophonist Seamus Blake, earned the prestigious "Best Czech Jazz Composition" award in 2024. A special guest for the evening will be Will Vinson, a globally acclaimed saxophonist celebrated for his breathtaking virtuosity and creative brilliance.
One of Europe’s leading vibraphonists, Miro Herak, joins forces with acclaimed Czech pianist Daniel Bulatkin in their brand-new project, Elysium. The music of this dynamic group reflects the shared Central European roots of its leaders, drawing heavily from Slavic and Gypsy folk traditions, impressionist classical influences, and the vibrant rhythms of the Balkans.
Herak and Bulatkin’s compositions merge wild, dynamic rhythms, lush soundscapes, and strong, memorable melodies. With the unique timbre of the vibraphone, the subtle integration of light electronics, and the use of extended techniques on the double bass, Elysium stands out as one of the most captivating new acts on the European jazz scene.
In recognition of their artistry, the group has been chosen as ambassadors of Czech jazz for the Year of Czech Music in 2024. As part of this prestigious honor, Elysium will perform on major stages worldwide, including jazz festivals in Tbilisi (opening for guitarist Bill Frisell), Jerusalem (opening for trumpeter Avishai Cohen), Budapest, Amersfoort, and the renowned Jarasum Jazz Festival in South Korea. Looking ahead to 2025, the group’s tour will expand to include performances in London, Rome, and other iconic venues.
'Co-led by the prodigious young talent, Daniel Bulatkin, at the helm of the piano and keys, this quartet weaves a tapestry of musical innovation and promises an unparalleled musical journey.' Simon Sargsyan, Jazzbluesnews.com
