Stéphane Denève - conductor
The evening’s performance begins with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, the Pastoral, originally dubbed ‘recollections of life in the country’, depicted by its buoyant melody and birdcalls.
Brussels Philharmonic’s programme tonight gives focus to French composer Guillaume Connesson, recognised as one of the youngest and most gifted contemporary composers of today and a firm favourite of Stéphane Denève, who has remarked on his ‘amazing orchestration… the quality of writing for large orchestra on the level of a Ravel or Stravinsky!’ Connesson’s short and sharp Flammenschrift (Letter of fire), written by Connesson with Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony in mind, is furious, lively and full of colour.
To end the evening, the orchestra plays Respighi’s four movement tone poem Pines of Rome, a dazzling and glittering display of orchestral colour.
