From Annecy to Mauritius: Meet Lionel, a digital expert

Can you introduce yourself and tell us about your background?

I'm originally from Annecy and bring over 25 years of experience in the commercial and digital sectors. My career has been a blend of practical learning, advancing through diverse environments, and a persistent curiosity about new technologies. I began in sales, focusing on understanding customer needs and building trust. Over time, I observed the significant impact of digital technology on business strategies, which led me to specialize in optimizing online processes. I have delved into automation, customer acquisition strategies, and more recently, artificial intelligence, which is revolutionizing our interactions with prospects and customers.

Currently, I am employed by a specialized IT company, where I support small and medium-sized French companies in enhancing their commercial activities online. My expertise lies in developing content and integrating customer acquisition processes. What drives me daily is aiding companies in structuring their growth by finding the optimal balance between technological advancements and human connections.

What brought you to Mauritius?

Living in the tropics has been a secret dream of mine since around 2005-2006. Back then, I started a dream book where I would casually clip out pictures, letting my deepest desires guide the scissors without much thought. Among those images, for unknown reasons, were photos of Mauritius.

Fast forward to 2016, and fate seemed to nudge me. A client asked me to come to Mauritius to manage the marketing for a conference at the Intercontinental Resort Balaclava. It was winter in France, and the moment I stepped onto Mauritian soil, I was struck by the warmth, the sunlight, and the uniquely aromatic air—it was an indescribable feeling.

Instead of resting from the long flight, I felt an irresistible urge to explore immediately. As I traveled around, everything clicked. Each landscape and moment resonated deeply with me. It was more than a mere visit; it felt predestined. The visions I had unknowingly placed in my dream book years earlier were unfolding right before my eyes. This profound connection with Mauritius stayed with me, and eventually, I made the dream a reality.

Five years after settling on the island, are you happy with your choice?

Five years on, my response is more about feeling than analytical reasoning: yes, I made the right choice.

I landed here with just five suitcases and a deep-seated desire for change—no elaborate plans, just a strong intuition and a yearning for a fresh start. The moment I stepped off the plane and the warm Mauritian air enveloped me, I knew.

It felt like everything inside me clicked into place. The island's light, colors, and energy resonated with me in a profoundly different way, signaling more than a mere escape to the tropics—it was a true calling to settle down.

Admittedly, there were moments of adjustment and questioning. Yet, each morning when I wake up here, I'm reaffirmed by that same sense of certainty. Here, I am distanced from the clamor and routine, drawn closer to what truly matters.

Would I make the same decision again? Without a second's hesitation. Sometimes, the most profound decisions we make are those guided by our feelings, not our logic.

Did you find it hard to adapt to the island life?

Adapting to Mauritius was more than just a change of scenery; it was a profound, almost instinctive transformation. From my first moments here, I felt an internal resonance with the island, as if a part of me had long been awaiting this connection.

Language was not a barrier, though learning Creole took me some time. I started by listening, gradually picking up the nuances, and eventually, I found myself understanding and speaking it without realizing when I had crossed that threshold. It became more than a language; it shaped a new way of being for me.

Adjusting to the slower pace of life was another significant change. Coming from a fast-paced environment where every minute was accounted for, I learned to embrace a different rhythm here—to slow down, let things unfold in their own time, and appreciate the moment. Initially challenging, this slower pace soon felt right.

The connections I made also eased my adaptation. In Mauritius, relationships form naturally. The local warmth and generosity were unlike anything I had experienced before. Through shared meals, laughter, and stories, I transitioned from feeling like an expat to being part of the community.

Now, I feel more Mauritian than French, not by passport, but by heart. I embody this island in my outlook, my speech, and my breath. Mauritius is no longer just where I live—it is my home.

What do you like most about Mauritius, and what do you like least?

What captivates me most about Mauritius is its distinctive lifestyle. The sun, the ocean, and the ever-present nature are all enchanting, but it's the people who make the most profound impression. The hospitality here is genuine, interactions are heartfelt, and there's a comforting simplicity in daily life.

The cultural diversity also deeply appeals to me: a melting pot of traditions, flavors, and languages that exude a unique energy—a balance of tranquility and dynamism that enriches every day.

Conversely, the local approach to time can sometimes be challenging. Processes, especially in administration, tend to take longer, requiring an adjustment in patience and expectations that not everything will proceed on schedule.

Moreover, getting around without a car can be difficult. Buses move slowly and taxis can be costly, complicating daily transportation.

Despite these minor frustrations, the benefits of living in Mauritius far outweigh the inconveniences. The island has profoundly changed me; I cannot imagine living elsewhere.

So, you assist entrepreneurs and business leaders in developing their online business, mainly in France. How do you manage your activity from Mauritius?

From Mauritius, I continue to support entrepreneurs and business leaders in France with the same dedication and responsiveness as if I were physically present. Utilizing a suite of digital tools, I maintain close contact with my clients through video conferencing, email, and collaborative platforms, ensuring that the geographical distance does not impact the quality of our interactions.

The serene environment of Mauritius not only inspires me daily but also helps me maintain focus. I enhance my efficiency by automating certain tasks and using advanced technology to optimize remote work.

Regarding my residency, I secured an Occupation Permit in 2019, which allows me to live and work here, with renewal required every three years. The process was straightforward and facilitated by the local authorities, enabling a smooth transition to this new base of operations.

They are sometimes surprised to learn about the straightforward visa process and the favorable business environment. When I outline the benefits of living and working here—such as the simplified administrative procedures, advantageous taxation, and exceptional quality of life—their interest often turns into genuine consideration.

My role has largely been informational, helping to dispel myths and provide a realistic view of what settling in Mauritius can offer. By sharing my experiences and the tangible advantages of the island, I help potential investors and entrepreneurs see Mauritius not just as a holiday destination but as a viable and appealing location for both living and doing business under very favorable conditions.

The digital sector in Mauritius offers a prime opportunity for entrepreneurs due to its modern infrastructure and superior connectivity. The island is evolving into an innovation hub, especially in fields like digital marketing, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence, all bolstered by a stimulating living environment.

Likewise, the eco-tourism sector is seeing robust growth as today's travelers increasingly seek authentic experiences. These visitors prefer smaller, immersive experiences that connect them with local culture and nature over traditional large-scale tourist setups. This approach allows you to genuinely connect with the island's spirit and understand its lifestyle. Living like a local and engaging with the community can provide deeper insights into the pace of life and help you adopt the island's way of life. Such immersion reveals Mauritius from various perspectives, highlighting its unique habits and mindset.

Building a reliable network is also crucial. In Mauritius, personal and professional relationships are key. This network will serve as a fundamental support system. The people of Mauritius are incredibly welcoming, and having the right connections can make you feel at home much more quickly.

However, it's important to be aware of some of the less obvious aspects of living in Mauritius. The pace can be slower than what you might be used to, particularly in administrative matters, which can be a source of frustration. Moreover, some services may not always meet the standards expected by those from more developed countries.

Living in Mauritius has taught me the value of slowing down and embracing the present. While the environment is indeed enchanting, it demands a genuine capacity to adapt in order to fully appreciate what the island has to offer.
