The Indian Ocean Island Games 2023: A celebration of sports and culture

This winter, all eyes are on a truly exceptional event: the Jeux des Îles. This one-of-a-kind sports competition unites the residents and athletes from the Indian Ocean islands to honor their variety and love for sports. Beyond being just a regular competition, it offers a valuable chance to create strong connections between the islands and display their cultural riches.

A tradition rooted in history

The origin of the Jeux des Îles dates back to the determination of the Comité Régional Olympique et Sportif (CROS) de La Réunion to bring together the Indian Ocean islands through a sporting event in 1974. Initially referred to as the Indian Ocean Games, this event gained recognition from the International Olympic Committee two years later, in 1976. However, it wasn't until 1979 that the inaugural games took place in La Réunion, under the name "Indian Ocean Games" that we are familiar with today. This forward-thinking initiative established a connection among the islands in the southeastern Indian Ocean, namely Madagascar, Reunion, Seychelles, Maldives, Comoros, Mayotte, and, of course, Mauritius.

Football to kickstart things

Staying true to tradition and for practical reasons related to the players' recovery, the soccer event will inaugurate the festivities this year. On August 24, the footballers will step onto the field, marking the official commencement of the sporting competitions. However, the formal beginning of the Games will occur with the opening ceremony, set for the next day at the Mahamasina stadium.

The competition schedule will span across multiple days, featuring group stages, direct elimination rounds, and the finals. Day 4, August 29, is anticipated to be particularly intense, encompassing all disciplines except judo, rugby sevens, karate, and kickboxing.

The rugby sevens competition is scheduled for September 1 to 2 at the Kianja Makis. In this discipline, only the host country, Mauritius, and La Réunion will field teams. Wrestling, weightlifting, and taekwondo events are slated for August 26 to 29. The involvement of young participants will play a crucial role throughout the Games.

The 2023 Island Games will conclude on September 3, marked by a closing ceremony expected to be unforgettable. This will provide an occasion to honor the athletes' accomplishments, celebrate the strengthened connections among the participating islands, and commemorate the enduring legacy of these Games.
