US Military Bases Abroad

Dannyroc3

Because there are so many foreign military bases, stations, posts, etc (700-8000) I wondered if anyone has either shopped at or found any benefit from those bases that are not to far off.

I have some base privileges, and if I do a visa run to the Phil. or another country, I might at least stock up on friendly food.

I do not need medical care but I wonder if that might be available to those who qualify for one of the military-related programs.

Probably cheaper to shop at one of the many Annam Gourmet stores in the greater HCMC area:

https://shop.annam-gourmet.com/

Also, Mega Market, Lotte Mart, GO! (formerly "Big C") and Coop Markets all have a certain amount of foreigner friendly foods.

If you provide her basic recipes and/or YouTube videos, your girlfriend will almost certainly want to try and cook them for you.

Also try "Grab Mart", a very useful feature of the Grab App.

Type in the name of a particular grocery item and it will search the greater HCMC area for you and provide delivery.

There's also a new feature that will let you search restaurants for type of food as well as a delivery food function.

If you don't know how to use it, your GF certainly will.

Hopefully you are gradually going to embrace local cuisine to the point that the things you crave the most are Vietnamese dishes.

Good luck!

@OceanBeach92107  YEs that was actually another subject I was going to look into- where is the best grocery options in Saigon.  In this smaller city there is very little for me to work with.  We went to Dalat and found an interesting grocery store and then the other day we went to Bien Hoa for a day to look around and bought a few things at the grocery store there.

One of my problems is, I rarely enjoy fish or seafood so that limits my appeal for local food. However, local food is what I eat daily now with the occasional pizza or fried chicken. In fact, since we now have a proper kitchen we rarely eat out.

On a lark I made french toast this morning.  With honey on top of course. I bought a pint of milk for the occasion. It was called Dalat Milk and it was pre sweetened and tasted delicious.  She seemed to like my first effort in the kitchen.

I would like to make a simple spaghetti, if I could find sausage and a jar of premade sauce.

When I return I think I will have one or two unneeded suite cases I can fill with food items.

I downloaded the Grab App, but I don't have a phone number to register with yet. I'll work on that when I get back.

Phương Hà Shop in district 1 also has a lot of random hard to get foreign food stuff. Really depends on what your specifically looking for.

Dannyroc3

@jrharvey I think I went to their website but it had very little inventory posted.

You cant trust any actual website here unless its a really big brand. It really depends on what your looking for. I have found that shop to have more stuff from the US than anywhere else. Lots of stuff from costco.
