Right on the Haitian border

What are the border Haitian cities like? The furthest I have gone in that direction is Barahona.

Guest2022

You could just about call Barahona a city with a population of 140k, but beyond that in the south west they are towns. Pedernales is about 30k. Neiba 50k and Jimani barely 20k.

The coastline with mainly pebble beaches south of Barahona is in places spectacular with great places to stop and pass the day with locals such as San Rafael and Los Patos. To get to Pedernales you drive through drier terrain and the national park and before the town is the turn to Cabo Rojo and Playa de las Aguilas. The far south west is full of ecotourist opportunities and did feel safer than the north west border. There are permanent road control stations along the route.

At least I have spent a day on that wonderful beach swimming and relaxing with very few other visitors and totally untouched. I can say that about Grace Bay in Turks and Caicos too. Once they get developed such superb beaches are not the same.

AlaPlaya

I'm so sad to see these plans for that area. I hope they do a better job preserving public beach access than they have in Punta Cana.

On a somewhat related note-I thought there were plans to build an airport near Pedernales... this plan looks like it's going to go on top of the existing airstrip?

Guest2022

I dont see a problem opening up other parts of DR to tourism.

No point being selfish wanting treasures exclusively.

It is demanded by richer folk to provide new destinations.

DR still has some gems like Punta Rucia which have avoided exploitation to satisfy modern demands.

I still believe a day at Los Patos will exceed any real Dominican experience found in the future in this new resort zone.

Azua has some untouched equal beaches too.

The energy production in Pedernales is not enough for the mega tourist development project of Cabo Rojo , in that province, promoted by the government of Luis Abinader. That is why the projected plan considers the construction of a solar farm among the sources to diversify the energy matrix of the region.

According to the estimates set forth in the plan, the demand for energy would increase to 72% in the next 20 years, as the hotel projects are developed.

For 2015, the establishments in Pedernales with the largest number of employees estimated that, in percentage terms, spending on salaries ranked second, only behind the cost of electricity, which in some cases represented up to 60% of expenses. totals.

The pages of the book that includes the Cabo Rojo development plan present the dimension of the project. ( DEVELOPMENT PLAN FOR CABO ROJO, PEDERNALES. )
The Los Cocos Wind Farm is installed in Pedernales , managed by the company EGE Haina, with a nominal capacity of 5.1 MVA (megavolt-ampere).

In the province, which is one of the three poorest in the country, there are also homes that lack electricity or suffer continuous power cuts.

"The power outages, which have decreased in recent years, strongly affect the hospitality link, since it prevents quality service in hotels," indicates the development plan set out by the government in a 377-page book that contains the technical reports of a team of consultants.

The level of radiation in the southwestern region supposes favorable conditions for the development of a solar farm that allows the self-consumption of the tourist complex, which is one of the main objectives in terms of energy. This would complement the existing wind energy production.

In general, the government projects the construction of 12,000 rooms in an intervention of 3,800 hectares. To do this, it promoted the project at the recent International Tourism Fair held in Madrid.

The development plan calculates a medium-term demand for electricity of 11,653 kVA (kilovolt-amperes) per day, considering consumption by 1,600 hotel rooms and a population of 18,316 inhabitants.

The consultants also propose the installation of a water desalination plant in the plan. Also, continue with technical studies. Likewise, they suggest agreeing with the Ministry of Tourism and the Pedernales Municipal Mayor's Office on said Tourism Development Plan, "since the use of the spaces differs from what is contemplated in the territorial ordering plans" of said ministry. Big investments need big money.....enter the Qataris.....

Pedernales tourism and agricultural products, in the sights of the Qatari delegation
https://www.diariolibre.com/actualidad/ … rd/1607741

The Qatari commission that is visiting the Dominican Republic traveled to Pedernales to see directly the ambitious tourism project that the Government has in that demarcation, where it intends to invest more than US$1.3 billion.

The visit to that distant southern town was made this Thursday morning by part of the 12-person delegation that has been in the Dominican Republic since Tuesday. Tomorrow, Friday, there will be an exhibition of the project.

This Thursday afternoon, the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, received the multisectoral team, headed by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Soltan bin Saad Al-Muraikhi, at the Palace . Previously, the vice president and other officials offered them a dinner in the same government house .

"We hope that concrete projects come out of here," said Dominican Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez after seeing off the delegation from the Palace. He considered that the fact that the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, has sent such a large delegation, "is a good sign of the interest that Qatar has in the Dominican Republic", which, in his opinion, is due to the economic stability , the Government and the location.

During their stay in the country, the local ministers of Industry and Commerce, Energy and Mines, Agriculture, the direction of Pro Dominicana , Civil Aviation have made presentations with the idea of getting visitors from the Middle East to invest in Quisqueyan soil.

Of those lines, the area of agriculture could have the possibility of closing agreements. As the country stands out in the production of greenhouse products, "so there is a great possibility that the Dominican Republic is supplying Qatar with those products that are essential for them ," said Foreign Minister Álvarez.

In the delegation there was also a representative of the airline Qatar Airways Company , since Abinader's goal is for the country to become an air hub for Qatar in the Americas.

The delegation is also made up of Issa bin Mohammed Al Mannai, director of American Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Yaser Awad Al-Abdulla, Acting Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of the State of Qatar in Santo Domingo; Salman Nabet Al Khulaifi, President of the Department of South America and the Caribbean at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

They will leave the country in the afternoon of this Friday, January 28.

Cabo Rojo does look like the place for the future in DR with the planned developments attracting a higher spend tourist. The area has it all. Of all the places I have travelled and visited in DR, I have believe the South West is the most beautiful and varied with so many places to visit - and not just a beach and flat lowland areas surrounding. The problem has been is that it is so remote from the rest of the country with limited good hotel accommodation to use as a base for ones stay.

Airport to be built in Pedernales would be the third in passenger flow in the DR

They are planning big for this area and Cabo Rojo, with the Pedenales airport projected to have more passengers than Santiago by the fourth phase of the development coming in after Punta Cana and Las Americas only.

In another significant development the planned airport will not be where the current Pedernales airport is but will be at Los Tres Charcos which is closer to Oviedo but still within half an hour of the planned Cabo Rojo resorts and so will become a gateway to Barahona province and the beautiful coastline there too.

Cabo Rojo will be able to receive more than 400,000 tourists a year

The first phase of the tourism project proposed for the Cabo Rojo area will be able to receive 443,908 guests annually, a daily average of 1,216 tourists per day, while the creation of 8,325 jobs will be required to materialize it, according to the projections of the capacity study of tourist load ordered by the Pro - Pedernales Trust and carried out by the company Russa García y Asociados, of which Diario Libre obtained a copy.

According to the document and as the Government has advanced, the first phase of the Cabo Rojo tourism project will include eight hotels (4,700 rooms) and four eco-hotels -1,100 rooms- for a total of 5,800 rooms.

Capacity projections were determined using a standard metric of 2.5 average guests per room per night.

The letter establishes three criteria for tourist load. The first is physical carrying capacity (CCF), which averages 1,702 guests per night and 621,180 per year. The second is the actual carrying capacity (CCR), which proposes the figure of 1,216 guests per night and 443,908 per year. Lots of new jobs

The data from the study indicate that phase 1 of the project, already underway, will require 8,325 direct jobs to complete it, while some 24,975 indirect jobs will be created, according to estimates.

Of the direct jobs, 32 percent (2,664) will be equipment operators and 25 percent are workers at various levels (2,081). The work will also require 25 percent of mid-level technicians (2,081), 10 percent of first-line management (833), five percent of middle management (416) and three percent of senior management (250).
