Moving to Morocco
This article will give you information on how to move your belongings to Morocco, and how to select a carrier that will move your things safely.
If you have decided to move your belongings to Morocco, you might choose to hire a carrier to ship everything. You will have to specify which objects or goods require special care (special packaging, special packages, etc.). Also specify what you will do yourself (disassembly of furniture, packing dishes, etc.). To find a carrier or a mover, search online, look through the yellow pages or refer to the links provided below. You can also have a look at our international movers' directory.
Regarding the quote, you must consider the following issues:
- the departure address
- the destination address in Morocco
- the volume
- the type of transport
- benefits with the carrier
- the price
Procedures
Expatriates commonly route their belongings directly to their new home. However, some carriers do not guarantee delivery to your home, but to a storage spot. This will eventually involve additional costs in order to move your belongings to the final destination. Seek information about the conditions of transport and routing in advance.
Make a comprehensive list of your belongings to establish a value statement. The value statement is a document allowing you, in case of loss or damages, to set appropriate compensation for any damage. You must fill it out and specify the overall value of your property and the value of some assets that could exceed the contractual limit value object (depending on the carrier - seek information and read the terms and conditions of the contract thoroughly). This statement is essential. It won't be possible to make an estimation without it, and this could compromise your move and all your organisation. A casualty insurance will also be offered by the carrier. This insurance covers non-predictable transport damages for the value indicated in your statement. The cost of this insurance will vary depending on the overall value of your belongings. The moving company will give you a certificate of insurance.
Finally, you will have to sign the consignment form for the loading and delivery of your belongings. This form mentions the terms of the contract, the mode of transport, the volume transported, the name and address of the client, and the transport company. By signing this letter, you agree to the loading and delivery of your belongings as per the terms of the contract.
What to bring to Morocco
Generally, it's better to bring with you in person important items like your computer, some clothing, musical instruments, etc. The roads in Morocco are not always safe, so there's always the chance that items might get damaged when moved to the destination inside the country. If not necessary, avoid moving furniture, as even moving it into the house can be a hassle both for you (in case it's moved to a storage place) and the mover.
Good to know:
In case your belongings have been moved to a storage, you'll find that local moving companies operate in most cities but charge extra for further places and smaller towns. It's good to keep in mind that in each neighbourhood, you'll find a local meeting point for truck and pick up drivers, ask around and people will show. Ask any truck driver, give them the location and negotiate a good price. Keep in mind that if you don't speak Darija fluently, or a little French, it's better to ask someone who does to handle it, but generally just a written address would suffice.
Costs
It is common to pay removal costs in two instalments: the deposit can be paid during the loading and the balance upon delivery. You can just as easily pay at once or as defined with the carrier.
Important:
The carrier will handle all the paperwork for your move (customs, clearance, etc.). You should opt for a FIDI affiliate (International Federation of International Movers) carrier.
Good to know:
You are advised to check in advance with the Moroccan embassy or consulate for international removals to get information on any specific provision or for information on banned products.
