You can drive with an international driver's license in Morocco for a period of one year as from your date of arrival in the country. You will need to obtain a Moroccan driving license if you intend to stay longer.

Exchange of foreign driving licenses in Morocco

The right to exchange the foreign license for a Moroccan driving license is granted to foreign nationals residing in Morocco if there is a driver's license recognition agreement between Morocco and the applicant's country of origin or the country where the applicant is currently residing. There is an agreement between Morocco and most African, middle eastern countries and all EU countries. For others, you may ask at your local registration centre.

To exchange a foreign driving license for a Moroccan driving license, you will need to produce the following documents:

  • an application made on a special form Formula IIIa (white form), duly completed and signed by the applicant
  • a certified copy of a valid national passport or identity card for Moroccan citizens, or registration card for foreigners living in Morocco
  • a medical certificate delivered less than three months prior to your application by a doctor approved by the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport and the Minister of Health
  • four recent passport photographs (size 35 x 45 mm)
  • proof of payment of stamp duty and fee of MAD 450
  • the original valid foreign driver's license
  • a certificate of authenticity of the license

Applications must be filed at the nearest registration centre to your place of residence in Morocco. For more information, please contact the embassy or consulate of your country in Morocco.

Getting a new driver's license in Morocco

If you do not yet have a valid driver's license, you can also learn to drive and take the test to get a license while you are in Morocco. First, you will have to attend courses in a driving school, where you will learn traffic rules. The courses are offered in French as well as in Moroccan Arabic. You may also buy the software from the driving school, or download it online, then report to the driving school for the tests only. Next, you must pass a driving test. There are driving schools located in most neighbourhoods in big cities.

To do so, you need:

  • A duly filled form (driving test request), which you can pick up at the local driving school.
  • Copy of ID, residency card or passport
  • Fees and service payment receipt (around 2,000 Dh)
  • Recent medical clearance (less than 3 months) established by a doctor certified by the Department of Transportation
  • 2 recent 35 x 45 mm photographs

 Good to know:

In Morocco, traffic regulations are not always strictly observed, and accidents are quite frequent. You should be very cautious while driving in the country and pay attention to bikes driving near you; it's a common cause of traffic accidents in Morocco.
