Marrakesh is a great place to be for expats who like to enjoy history, entertainment, nature, or even just relaxing in the sun. It is a city with beautiful historic sights and a vibrant nightlife, yet is just next to stunning mountain ranges and refreshing hiking spots.

Historical sights

The first place to visit in Marrakesh is definitely Jemaa el-Fna, the historic square at the centre of the city where you can find snake charmers, storytellers, traditional foods, and entertainers. You might also visit the majestic Koutoubia Mosque, the lush Majorelle Gardens, the reflective lake at the Menara Gardens, the spacious Bahia Palace, or the ancient Saadian Tombs. The list of sights to see in Marrakesh is long, so as an expat you will have plenty of places to visit in your spare time.

Entertainment

Marrakesh is known for its restaurants, bars, and nightlife. It is one of few cities in Morocco that have bars that are frequented by expats, tourists, as well as locals, and has many dining options with a variety of cuisines available. Marrakesh also hosts several art and film festivals each year.

Relaxing

Marrakesh has some beautiful hotels and spas if you prefer to spend your spare time relaxing and pampering yourself. Many hotels have outdoor swimming pools where you can spend your day sunbathing. You might be interested in trying a hammam, or traditional bath, some of which are similar to spas.

Hiking

Marrakesh is not far from Ourika valley, a beautiful spot in the mountains where you can spend the weekend hiking. It is also not far from Mount Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa. You can find desert tours leading from Marrakesh which will lead you into the sand dunes on a camel. There are even some ski slopes high in the mountains.
