Sports and fitness are generally very popular in Western countries, but they are not as big of a priority in Cambodia. Gyms are popular with locals as well as expats, but sports are not as popular as they are in other countries. Regardless, there are still options for expats who are interested in sports.
Gyms in Phnom Penh
Fitness is a priority for many expats and is often one of the first things you look into after settling into a new city. Gyms can be easily found throughout the city, but there is a huge range of cost and services offered. Local gyms can be found scattered around the city. Entrance fees typically range from 1,000-4,000 riel (USD0.25-1.00) per session. They are definitely a bargain, but they don't offer as much as Western gyms. They usually have free weights, a few lifting machines, and treadmills. Also, they usually do not have air conditioning.
Western gyms can cost up to USD200 per month, but there are much more reasonable options in Phnom Penh. The Phnom Penh Sports Club is one of the most popular gyms in the city. For 20,000 Riel (USD5) per day, you have access to a high-class gym, sauna, and pool. Superfit is another popular option, boasting a high-class environment and state of the art equipment. On the downside, prices are on the high side, starting at 32,000 Riel (USD8) per day.
Traditional sports in Phnom Penh
There are a number of traditional sports in Cambodia that can be watched in Phnom Penh like bokator (Khmer martial arts), traditional boat racing, pradal serey (Khmer kickboxing), and Khmer traditional wrestling. Some of these only occur on public holidays, such as boat races, so you can't view them year-round.
Modern sports in Phnom Penh
More modern sports, such as football and basketball, have become much more popular in recent years. Cambodia has a national team for each, and games are held regularly in Phnom Penh.
If you are more interested in playing than watching, there are lots of options. In Phnom Penh, there is an official Australia rules football team, called the Cambodian Eagles. Even if you know nothing about the sport, you are welcome to join. They will teach you the rules when you join. They have practice on Thursdays and Saturdays and hold official games against other teams from around Southeast Asia regularly. For more info, check out their Facebook page called Cambodian Eagles.
The Phnom Penh Social Rugby Club hosts regular touch football and rugby games for men and women. Expats and locals are welcome to join. The first game costs $4, but subsequent games are free. The best way to get in contact is through their Facebook page at Phnom Penh SRC.
The biggest amateur football club in Phnom Penh is Riel Phnom Penh FC, which has over 100 members. Games take place near the Russian Market and are held for both men and women. It costs $2 for women to join and $3 for men. You can check in with them through their website Riel Phnom Penh FC.
