Phnom Penh is rapidly developing into an international capital city. While it used to be a literal ghost town, it now plays host to many unique things to do. From local events and down to earth events, to more upbeat activities, there are plenty of things to do in Phnom Penh on a weekday.

There are enough activities going on around the week in Phnom Penh that you won't run out of things to do. It all depends on what you are interested in doing.

Restaurants and bars in Phnom Penh

If you want a relaxing night out, how about trying out the great food scene that Phnom Penh has to offer. From delicious Western food to some of the best Khmer food in the country, you are sure to find something that will please your palate.

If you would rather go out for a drink, there are plenty of bars to choose from. If you are looking for a classic dive bar, make sure to visit Zeppelin, a local institution known for its great music and grumpy owner. If you want a more high-end experience, the sky bar at SORA Vattanac Capital Building offers a swank refined atmosphere along with the best views in the city.

Nightlife in Phnom Penh

If you want to spend your weeknights partying, check out the two most famous clubs in the city: Hearts of Darkness and Pontoon. These institutions of the party scene of Phnom Penh are well regarded but are also fairly seedy. The neighbourhood they are located in is not the nicest, and it is known to attract sex workers. Regardless, they are often the go-to places for expats looking for a fun night out. If you want to party, but in a hipper and less seedy sort of way, make a beeline to Doors, a hip bar and club which offers plenty of events throughout the week and live music. They also serve excellent food and often have fun food-based events such as tapas night.

If you want to go out for the night, but have no interest in drinking or clubbing, why not check out Nerd Night? This public speaking event is hosted every Monday and features 4 to 6 speakers who will school you on a topic of their choosing for 7 minutes each. You would be surprised how many interesting things you can learn about here. Check out their facebook page for details about when and where the next event will be taking place.

Movie theatres in Phnom Penh

Many people are surprised to find that they can see a large variety of English films in Phnom Penh, which makes for a nice relaxing night out. For the latest blockbusters, check out Major Cineplex at the AEON or Sorya mall, which offer a wide range of Hollywood films. The new Major Cineplex in AEON 2 even has IMAX! If you are more interested in independent cinema, try The Flicks Community Movie House or Meta House.

As you can see, there are plenty of things to keep you busy on a weekday in Phnom Penh. The only trouble is choosing what to do!
