What to do in Male
The Maldives bustling capital of Male is the 5th most densely populated city in the world. Covering an area of just six square kilometres and having a population of over 150,000 people, the city has the highest concentration of buildings, people, and transportation in the Maldives. Offering a different type of setting compared to the idyllic islands scattered in the Indian Ocean, Male is the centre of Maldivian culture and business. Planning a move to Male? Culture
If you want to learn more about the Maldives, the country's history, culture, and traditions, Male is the best place to be. You could start with a visit to the National Museum housing a collection of historic artefacts dating back to the ancient and medieval periods as well as showcasing modern arts and crafts. You can also walk around the city (this should not take long given its small areas) exploring old and new buildings, visiting the country's oldest mosque dating back to 1656, and more.
Cuisine
Male is a great place to explore local flavours. Influenced by India, Africa, and the Middle East, Maldivian cuisine is simple yet incredibly diverse. You will have a wide choice of fresh seafood, which you can conveniently purchase at the city's Fish Market. Don't miss out on trying the local specialities like the Maldives' famous breakfast of mas huni (a mix of tuna, coconut, and onion served with chilli) and the popular afternoon snacks known as hedhikaa, available in tea shops and also called 'short eats'.
The beach
Male is not a popular destination for a beach holiday ' for this, most travellers head to the islands where they can enjoy the relaxing idyllic environment in full. However, Male does have the so-called Artificial Beach where you can relax after a long day at work with a swim or a quick snack at one of the many cafes surrounding the beach.
Visit nearby islands
When you are ready to get away from the urban bustle, consider visiting nearby islands. While transfers by seaplane tend to be on the pricey side, speedboat trips are, generally, much quicker and more affordable. Relaxing on the islands in the North Male Atoll or the South Male Atoll should not involve too much travel. You could also visit the adjacent island of Hulhule Island where Male International Airport is located.
Nightlife
Male is not a particularly busy area when it comes to nightlife. Alcohol sales and consumption are not allowed in the city ' and there are basically no bars or clubs in the city. If you want to have a drink, you will need to make a trip to the nearby Hulhule Island and head to Hulhule Island Hotel housing one of the only bars in the area.
