Once you have decided to move to the Maldives, you will need an efficient way to get your belongings there. This means sending your possessions by post, hiring a reliable removal company and making sure your move is easy and stress-free. Find out tips about how to organise your move to the islands in this article.

The way you will go about handling your move primarily depends on the purpose and length of your stay. If you are moving to the Maldives to work at one of the country's island resorts, you will probably not be able to take a lot of things with you. Plus, a lot of amenities and personal care items (like a hairdryer, for instance) will be provided by the hotel.

In this case, you can either bring your belongings with you in your luggage or send them over by post. EMS is available in the Maldives ' but make to check the cost of shipping to the Maldives from your country as well as how long this would take.

Good to know:

Note that there are a few things you are not recommended to bring into the country: primarily this affects alcohol and religious material (books, items of worship, etc.).

If you have decided to relocate and will be living on your own, you may want to take more things with you. In this case, you might want to hire a removal company. This is an important step that might require a bit of research. Generally, you will start by choosing a relocation counsellor and setting up an appointment to make an in-house estimate. When evaluating your estimate for the service, the company will take into account several things: origin and destination address, the weight and volume of the transported objects, the type of transportation chosen (air, sea, land, etc.), the specifics of services, etc.

In most cases, the removal company will deliver your belongings right to the destination address ' but you will need to make sure that this is the case in your specific situation. Some removal companies may practice unloading your belongings at a warehouse ' this will involve additional costs as you will need to arrange further transportation on your own.

Making a list

In order to establish a value statement, you will need to make a detailed inventory. This is an important step as it will set the amount of compensation that you will receive in case your property is lost or damaged. Make sure you go through your contract carefully ' especially, when it comes to the handling of precious objects.

Damage insurance

When signing the contract with your removal company, make sure to inquire about damage insurance. This type of insurance will automatically cover unforeseen damage associated with transportation up to the total value of the transported belongings. Make sure that you get a certificate of insurance from your carrier.

Waybill

Before loading and after the delivery of your belongings, you will need to sign a waybill. This is a document that describes and terms of the contract and specifies the type of transportation, the weight of the transported items, name and address of both parties, etc. Note that once the waybill is signed, you have officially agreed for the removal company to go ahead with the move. Payment plans and options can vary from company to company but, generally, you will need to pay a deposit before loading and balance upon delivery.
