Male is the capital of the Maldives, the countrys largest and most populous city. With that, its still quite small in area (about six square kilometres) and has the population of a bit over 150,000 people. Like in the rest of the country, work opportunities in Male mainly can be mainly found in the hospitality field.
Economy
The capital city's economy is heavily dependant on the tourism sector. Male serves as the gateway for arriving visitors from where they explore the rest of country. Here, you can find Velana International Airport as well as the head offices of Maldivian and FlyMe airlines.
Tourism is the main source of income in the city but there is also the shipbuilding industry, the financial sector, and fishing that make important contributions.
The capital city is also home to the country's main businesses as well as banks including the Bank of Maldives.
Labour market
As mentioned earlier, most of the city's income comes from tourism and hospitality, where a lot of the local, as well as expat population, is employed. While most of the resorts are scattered across the islands, the country's capital plays a key role in welcoming visitors, arranging transportation to other parts of the country, and more. Plus, there are several big resorts on the adjacent islands where work is available.
Outside the hospitality field, Male offer work opportunities in marketing, logistics, education (especially English teaching), and others. But finding a job not relating to the tourism sector will definitely be harder.
Find a job
To find a job in Male, you will first need to decide on the sphere you want to work in.
As mentioned above, the hospitality industry provides the most opportunities, especially for expats. To look for a job in hospitality, you can start by browsing through the list of resorts and hotels in the Maldives and send out random applications with your CV and cover letter. You can also browse specialised websites listing jobs in Male and nearby.
Speaking several foreign languages and having prior hospitality experience will definitely be advantageous throughout your job hunt.
If you are looking for work in other fields, you can also start by looking through the companies operating in the city and get in touch with them directly. You can also go through professional offers available online or try placement and recruitment companies to speed things up. Note, however, that some headhunting companies may charge you for their services.
Good to know:
Note that after you have secured a position, your employer will need to apply for the Employment Approval for you. Then, once you arrive in the Maldives, you will use this document to apply for a work visa and resident permit.
