Volunteering in Nepal

Published on 18 June, 2009

Many young people would like to combine their travels with some sort of volunteer job. This is a common sight in Nepal too.

There are quite a number of opportunities to do so for foreign English teachers, health professionals, mechanic's & computer nerds. One has to be aware that Nepal is a very backward country in education and health care and the circumstances for volunteering may turn out to be very basic and under lesser hygienic standards.

Most of the Nepalese private schools offer free food and lodge against service. Fairness asks that volunteers should be real professionals and no hobby teachers etc. For schools in general native English teachers (from UK, the USA and Canada etc.) are preferred.

One should not just come to Nepal and seek out such opportunities at random. Better is to find your organization, school, hospital, village health post or institute beforehand and fix everything by e-mail.

HRDSN helps those who look for such opportunities. Here is an example: The Augsburg Haus in Damauli,Tanahun District, Mid-Western Region in NEPAL needs a female volunteer teacher (native English speaker only; preferable from UK, USA or Canada). The school has just started as an initiative of two Nepalese teachers who lost their job due to closure of an other school. Only professional nursery-and primary school teachers please (or those ladies who study for teacher and want a practicum in a developing country) The school offers free lodging and (local) food. contact e-mail is info(at)hrdsnrescue.org.np
