Daegu is the fourth largest city in South Korea after Seoul, Busan and Incheon. The city has a population of over 2.5 million. Daegu is the capital city of the province of Gyeongbuk which has more than 5 million inhabitants. If you are seeking to work in Daegu, it will not be hard finding a job thanks to the city’s many career opportunities. However, it is essential to understand the local job market to identify the most promising fields.

The economy of Daegu

Daegu has a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita of $24,767, compared to more than double this amount in the country's capital of Seoul. However, Daegu has various specialised sectors, such as textiles, metals and machinery manufacturing. It is also one of the main industrial areas of the country.
Daegu's economy has been growing rapidly for the past years with a rise in the textile and clothing industries.

Not only big fashion stores and shopping malls can be found all around the city, but Daegu is also home to fashion training institutes and an international fashion school. Several international companies are also based in Daegu, including Samsung Mobile, LG, Hyundai, POSCO, as well as several companies specialising in financial services.

Daegu has a free economic zone which is known as the Daegu Gyeongbuk Free Economic Zone. It is divided into ten areas, each one specialising in one specific sector. However, the largest sectors are information and communications technologies, high technology, green energy and knowledge services.

The Gumi digital area is specialized in mobile displays, using photovoltaic solar energy as part of its contribution to green energy, while Pohang area is devoted to wind energy as well as nuclear research and technology. Seongseo, on the other hand, specialises in high technology for the automotive industry and machinery, while Technopolis is dedicated to high-tech manufacturing science based on green energy, electronics and telecommunications.

Gyeongsan is a student area with several university and training institutes. If you are looking for a commercial shopping area with large malls and entertainment facilities, Easiapolis is the right address. Here, you can not only buy almost anything you like, but the area is also home to a design school and other educational institutions. Other parts of Daegu also boast institutions, organisations and companies devoted to medical research and medicine, as well as logistics.

Find a job in Daegu

If you have the required qualifications and skills, you can send your CV and a cover letter to companies in the region. You may also check classified ads in local newspapers or job websites.
