In Belize, you can drive with an international driver's license, and you can often drive with a license from your country of origin. Eventually, however, a Belizean driver’s license will be required.

Most countries' driver's licenses are accepted in Belize, as is the international license. There are, however, a few caveats. The driver must be at least 18 years old. They must also be in possession of their original driver's license. While a misplaced or stolen license may not be a big deal in other countries, it is sufficient reason to confiscate your vehicle and even arrest you.

How long you are allowed to drive with your license from your country of issue is a question that will be answered differently by different people. It is never in your best interest to argue, even if you are sure you are right. Some have indicated that you must have a Belizean license within 90 days. However, you will need either a QRP card or a permanent resident card to get your license. Getting a permanent resident card takes a minimum of two years from arrival date. Your best bet is to explain to anyone questioning you that you will get your license as soon as you get permanent residency.

Applying for a driving license in Belize

Documents to be produced to apply for a national driver's license in Belize are:

  • a duly completed and signed application form, stamped by a medical doctor (the application can be obtained at any transport department).
  • proof of address (utility bill or other)
  • passport or social security card
  • QRP or permanent resident card
  • your license from your country of origin

The documents must be submitted at your region's traffic department. You may or may not have to take driving and written tests. Fees are BZD70 for first issue and BZD40 for renewal. The license is good for one year.

Good to know:

Expatriates in Belize are only eligible for the A and D class driver's licenses. The B, C and E class driver's licenses are reserved for residents and citizens of Belize.

You don't need an international drivers license. Your countries driver's license will do. We have seen this with people that have drivers licenses from countries that don't even have the latin characters. The police cannot know - they just accept. They are more interested that you have insurance (which they have daily road check points around the country for), which is a good thing here. You cannot get a local drivers license until you have lived in the country for a year (I have tried) - but you don't need to get it.
