Living abroad can make this a bit more complex; that's why we've gathered some information for you should you ever find yourself in that position during your stay in the Dominican Republic.

The different types of accident or emergency

Depending on the situation, you will need a different type of assistance, hence the importance of examining what sort of emergency it is.

Car accident

If the Dominican Republic is known for something other than beautiful beaches, it is their extravagant driving. The Dominican Republic ranks fourth among the countries in both the Caribbean and Latin America, where numerous accidents unfortunately lead to many fatalities.

Driving under the influence without a driving license or proper practice is why. That's why it is even more important for foreigners to be extra cautious when getting behind the wheel or on a bike.

Statistically, 81% of injuries and fatalities due to a road crash happen within the age group of 15 to 64 years, which may include the entire population.

The ratio between male versus female fatalities was 4:1 among 15–49 olds. In 2021, there were more traffic accident deaths recorded in the country than in 2022, reaching a figure of 2,967 fatalities.

The fatality rate per 2,967 people between 2021 and 2023 amounted to 5.9% – Switzerland, for example, had –5.4% during the same time frame.

If you find yourself in that unwanted position of a car or motorbike crash, the first thing you should do is secure the accident site.

Park your car in a safe spot, turn on the hazard warning lights, and place the warning triangle to protect and warn other drivers.

Next, call 911 "Sistema Nacional de Atención a Emergencias y Seguridad" and ask for help. Additionally, you can inform the "Brigada de Asistencia Vial de Obras Públicas" using the number 829-688-1000.

You can also call 809-381-2424 "La Casa del Conductor" if you're affiliated. This company is a one-stop shop for accidents. They help you with all organizational matters that come up in case of an accident, from reporting the accident to legal counsel and representation if needed.

While you're waiting, assist other people involved in the accident the best you can. Try to keep them calm and awake, and use your emergency kit if necessary.

Fire accident

If you should detect a fire in your house, evaluate the danger, try to use a fire extinguisher, and immediately call 911 if you cannot put it out yourself. Inform them about your address and leave the premises if possible.

Health emergencies in the Dominican Republic

If you or a household member is experiencing a medical emergency, you can also ask for immediate help from 911. US citizens with emergencies can call 809-567-7775 to seek emergency assistance.

Abduction in the Dominican Republic

In the unfortunate event of an abduction, time is a crucial factor. You can either inform 911 or call the national police at 809-682-2151 / 809-685-2020.

Domestic violence in the Dominican Republic

If you suffer from domestic abuse of any form, you can call 911 directly or communicate with the office for violence against women at 809-685-3755. They will help you and your children, regardless of your immigration status (whether you're a tourist or resident).
