Tips for joining groups and attending networking events in Copenhagen

Expanding your professional network is quite a challenge in Denmark, even for locals. Danes are reserved and usually have networks consisting of lifelong acquaintances, university friends, internship contacts, or mentors from their first jobs.

The first step to growing your professional network is finding common ground. If you decide to attend meetups and networking events, make sure that the groups are relevant to your interests and career fields. This will make it easier to build relationships with like-minded professionals.

Use these events to find out about local short courses and certification opportunities. Having some experience from Danish institutions will look great on your CV and help you adapt to the way things are done locally within your career field.

Make sure your CV and LinkedIn pages are updated ' if you happen to meet a potential networking contact, it helps if they can be directed to a professional profile page that is already in order. Similarly, having a business card ready to hand out is a smart move.

Attend a language course in Copenhagen

Language courses will help develop your Danish language skills and give you a deeper understanding of the culture. Your Danish colleagues and friends will be more likely to invite you out for casual drinks or even professional networking events if you can speak their language and fit in socially.

There are lots of language courses available across the city. There are some free conversation groups hosted by libraries that are open to everyone.

Intensive courses can last a few weeks while those who are still outside of Denmark can consider online classes.

Here are some language course institutions to check out:
