Galati, the city in the South of Moldavia, is one of the favourite destinations for expats moving to Romania. Although there are not so many places of interest, like in Timisoara or Constanta, Galati is a major naval construction and steel industry hub. Therefore, international engineers or workers in these industries will think about moving here. But before coming, here is an overview of the best accommodation here and some average living costs.

The most popular neighbourhoods in Galati

Galati has somewhere around 330,000 inhabitants and over 20 neighbourhoods, including several subdivisions. The most popular ones are the port, the city centre, and the Danube. The city centre is subdivided into three zones: the University Campus, the Station and the Rizer Park. Then you can choose from Aviatiei, Traian Nord, C.F.R. Station or Combinat Siderurgic.

In a top related to the safety element, the best neighbourhoods were Micro 16 and Micro 40. Here people said they feel the safest. When it comes to easy access to medical services, Micro 18 occupied the first place. In the middle of the top was Tiglina 3, while the last neighbourhood in this classification was Dimitrie Cantemir. Another neighbourhood with great facilities is Ultimul Leu.

 Good to know:

Galati has a very efficient public transport network, so wherever you are in the city, you will have buses, tramways, and trolleybuses always available. You can easily move around the city and the popular neighbourhoods here.

Types of accommodation in Galati

Galati is one of the cities in Romania in which buildings were affected by the Second World War. Therefore, the options for accommodation are not that diverse as in other cities in Romania. In fact, the majority of the accommodation options are low-income housing units. All in all, there are still some well-maintained residential complexes, in the more modern neighbourhoods, such as Belvedere Green Homes or Brates Lake.

 Good to know:

The expat population in Galati is still very low. If you have children that need to go to English schools, or you need an English speaking job, you can choose to commute to Bucharest, which is a four-hour drive away.

Rent prices in Galati

The monthly rent for an 85 m² furnished accommodation in an expensive area will be around 300 euros, while the same housing in a normal area costs 250 euros. The monthly rent for a 45 m² studio is 180 euros in an expensive area, while in a normal zone, it will be 130 euros. The prices depend on the area of the city, the furnished or unfurnished accommodation, as well as the facilities of the property.

How you can find accommodation in Galati

Great collection of info regarding Galati. Info should be updated regarding the safest neighborhoods, which are: - Mazepa 1 2; - Tiglina 1 2; All the Micro neighborhoods should be at the bottom of the list. Rent prices are largely underevaluated for 2020. A good selection of websites to look for rent should include: - www.olx.ro; - www.lajumate.ro; - www.publi24.ro; - www. imobiliare.ro (payment needed).
