Expats will always hear that it is difficult to move to another place, a statement that might affect or postpone the decision to move miles and miles away from home. However, Sibiu itself is out of a book. Named “The European Capital of Culture” some years ago, working in Sibiu can be a truly enriching experience. In fact, the professional experiences for foreigners in this Romanian city are quite rich. While the economic part of the city is very flourishing, living in this town would be a vibrant experience. Get to know the pleasant environment of Sibiu and the professional opportunities you will have. 

The economy of Sibiu

Sibiu is one of the most important cities in Transilvania, with a remarkable potential for economic development. The city has a great advantage due to its position on the 4th Paneuropean Corridor and with a transit International Europe. 

With a GDP of 19,2 milliard lei and an employment rate of 2 per cent, Sibiu is one of the most developed counties in Romania. These advantages lead to 2 industrial areas in the city, one in the East, one in the West of Sibiu. 

With the exception of the two biggest companies, Romgaz and Transgaz, which are in the state's property, the most important businesses in town are in the automobile domain. The third-place goes to the manufacturer of electromechanical and electronic switches and control systems, Marquardt Schaltsysteme. Then the giants from Kromberg & Schubert Romania Me are really important for the city, as they produce electrical systems and cables for the auto industry. 

The biggest auto manufacturing companies include Bilstein-Compa, Takata, Continental, and SNR Roulements. In the textiles domain, one of the world's leading luxury clothing brands, Louis Vuitton, has one of the factories here. 

Among the major foreign investors in Sibiu, it is important to mention Siemens and Metro. 

Promising fields of work in Sibiu

There are six major domains in which expats can work when moving to Sibiu: industry, trade, healthcare, transports, teaching, and construction. Given the fact that the industrial field is the most active and prosperous one, many jobs are available in this sector. 

Actually, 49 per cent of the city's employees work in the industry, 15 per cent are employed in trade and in construction, there are around 7,5 per cent in teaching and 6,5 per cent in transports. 

Finding a job in Sibiu

Sibiu has a strong community of German-speaking locals, so there are good chances to find a job which requires knowledge of this foreign language. However, knowing some Romanian will definitely be an advantage. 

This being said, Sibiu is a very open city when it comes to foreigners. Therefore, there will be a good selection of specialised job offers in English that expats can browse through. Also, people can use a social network such as LinkedIn to apply for a job, and also the recruiting websites, which contain the job vacancies updated. 

Using professional social networks like Linkedin can also prove to be very useful as well as contacting international and local companies with your CV and cover letter.

The National Employment Agency also advertises regularly job vacancies that are available in Sibiu. The same applies to Sibiu's Departmental Employment Agency. Note that this service is free of charge.

Wages in Sibiu

The Sibiu citizens are earning the most significant medium salary in the region, while the unemployment rate is very low. The most recent statistics calculated in 2019 an average salary of 2,900 lei. This means almost 600 euros.
