Relocating to a new country can be a complicated process, so it is helpful to start researching all of the necessary information well in advance of the move. Organising your visas, booking a removal company, and being aware of all customs and immigration requirements for yourself, your family and your pets will help make the process of moving to Slovenia simpler and less stressful.

Finding a moving company

When preparing for a move, there is a wide range of international removal companies who can assist with the relocation process. Prices can vary widely depending on the amount of goods to be transported, the size of the household, and the value of fragile and irreplaceable goods. It is recommended to get quotes from several removal companies before deciding. It is also useful to check their insurance policies, the transport time, and the transport method. Goods can be transported by land, sea or air, and costs will vary depending on the transport method and the delivery time frame.

To find a good moving company, look for businesses who are experienced, have positive customer reviews, are insured and accredited, and do not have any hidden fees within their pricing.

Preparing for the move

To best prepare for the move, first decide what you will pack and move by yourself, and what will be done by the moving company. All items of value should be declared to the movers, and it is recommended that you photograph all items for insurance purposes. The moving company will also ask for the value of expensive and fragile items to be declared, for insurance purposes.

For your peace of mind, you may wish to transport very fragile or personal items yourself, if you are worried that they may be damaged in the moving process.

Cars can be very expensive to transport, and if you are moving to Slovenia from outside of Europe, it may be better to sell your car and purchase another locally to avoid large transport costs.

Moving with pets

To move with a family pet into Slovenia (this includes cats, dogs, and ferrets), each animal must have a certificate to prove they have been vaccinated against rabies. This applies to animals from both EU and non-EU countries. It is important to have the documentation with you when entering the country, to ensure your pet can also enter the country without delay. In most cases, quarantine periods are not required for animals in good health, accompanied by all necessary documentation.

Customs requirements

When entering Slovenia, non-EU citizens must declare cash of any currency greater than 10,000 EUR. There are no restrictions on cash for EU citizens entering the country. To bring a firearm into the country, documentation must also be provided, such as a European Firearms Pass or a firearms certificate. There are also restrictions on quantities of tobacco, cigarettes, and alcohol that can be brought into the country.
