Zurich offers a fantastic quality of life. Despite being Switzerland's largest city, its proximity to mountains and lakes provides a perfect mix of charm and adventure, whether on weekends or during your free time. The city also boasts a vibrant cultural scene. Whether it's summer or winter, day or night, you'll always find something to do in Zurich, making it an exciting place to stay.

Weekday activities in Zurich

Cultural and historical visits

Zurich's cultural scene is incredibly diverse, with museums, monuments, concerts, and charming neighborhoods to explore. Here are a few suggestions:

The Grossmünster: One of Zurich's landmarks, the church is a key site of the Protestant Reformation and a prime example of Romanesque architecture. It features stained-glass windows by Augusto Giacometti, a Romanesque crypt, and a Reformation museum located in the cloister.

Opernhaus: Another city landmark, the Zurich Opera House, offers a diverse range of performances, including concerts, ballets, and recitals, ensuring you'll have plenty of options to choose from.

The Kunsthaus: Here, you can explore Swiss art by Giacometti and Fischli/Weiss, as well as Impressionism and modern art. The museum also features temporary exhibitions, workshops, and guided tours.

The Niederdorf district: Niederdorf in Zurich's Old Town offers a vibrant mix of restaurants, boutiques, landmarks, and charming facades. It's equally lively at night and definitely worth a visit.

Shopping

Most stores are closed on Sundays and quite crowded on Saturdays, so weekdays are the best time to shop in Zurich. For luxury brands, department stores, and trendy chains, head to Bahnhofstrasse, right across from Zurich's main railway station.

If you prefer smaller, independent shops, explore Zurich's Old Town. While shopping malls are rare in Switzerland, Zurich has a few, like Sihlcity and Europaalle, where you can find a diverse range of stores and products.

Have a drink

What better way to unwind after work than enjoying a drink with friends or colleagues in a lively setting? Zurich offers plenty of great spots for a night out. Langstrasse, near Zurich's main railway station, is packed with bars, including the popular Olé Olé, and restaurants that serve food late into the night.

For a more relaxed atmosphere, head toward the Limmat River and explore the Eldorado, where you can try 101 different beers from around the world. In summer, you'll also find numerous other bars along the riverbanks, such as Primitivo.

Weekend activities in Zurich

Weekends in Switzerland offer plenty of options for both relaxation and outdoor sports, whether you're in the city or exploring the surrounding nature.

Outdoor sports

If you're short on time during the week, use the weekend to fit in some exercise.

Even though Zurich is a large city, it offers many hidden gems for running, such as the scenic paths along the lake in Zurichhorn Park.

Try the 10-kilometer jogging trail that winds through the forest from Zurich Zoo for a more peaceful escape from the city's hustle and bustle. If jogging isn't your thing, a leisurely walk along this route is just as enjoyable. The area around the zoo is tranquil and provides stunning panoramic views of the city.

On weekends, many Zurich residents head to the Uetliberg to hike the Planet Trail. This family-friendly trail is relatively flat and offers stunning panoramic views of Lake Zurich. Completing the 6-km route takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes. Follow the signs, and when you reach Felsenegg, you can take the gondola to Adliswil station, then catch the S-Bahn back to Zurich.

If you're up for a bit more adventure, the nearby regions of Lucerne and Central Switzerland have a wealth of hiking trails and outdoor activities. You can find more information on the Switzerland Mobility website.

Relaxing by the lake

In the warmer months, Zurich residents enjoy swimming in the Limmat River or Lake Zurich. Whether you prefer swimming, sailing, kayaking, or paddleboarding, the lake has something for everyone.

The lakeside is perfect for a leisurely stroll, and you'll find many cafés and restaurants where you can take a break.

You can also hop on a cruise around Lake Zurich to enjoy stunning panoramic views of the city and the surrounding mountains.
