Applying for a passport and visa for a newborn in Oman
This article has useful information about the step-by-step process on how to obtain the Indian passport for your baby born in Oman.
Step 1. Collect proof of birth document from the hospital administrative staff (including baby vaccination record which is pink in colour) at the time of discharge.
Step 2. Go to nearest ROP office (civil registration section) and get Omani birth certificate (English & Arabic versions) by showing the proof of birth provided by the hospital (done within 1-2 hours). You also need an attested marriage certificate plus parents' passports/visa stamping and parents' resident cards (with Xerox copies of all). Please check the details like your baby's name, gender and religion in the birth certificate before you leave ROP office. Select your baby's name before you go to the ROP.
Step 3. Get the English version of the Omani birth certificate attested by the nearest Omani MOFA (done within 10-15 minutes).
Step 4. Apply for the newborn's passport at one of the BLS India centers (not the embassy). The baby's thumb print and two passport size photos are needed. The baby must be taken to the passport application center (application process takes 30-45 minutes depending on the queue).
Step 5. Collect newborn's passport couriered to your Oman address (they also send an Indian birth certificate along with the passport). This may take 10-12 days.
Step 6. Go to your employer and submit the passport (in original) along with the Omani birth certificate. Your employer will get the visa work done. You can finally collect the passport with visa stamping (visa valid for two years from the date of birth) from your employer within 1-2 weeks.
As from March 2017, one has to spend approx. 40 Rials in total to get the passport. Visa charges are usually paid by the employers.
The newborn need not undergo any medical tests because the mother has already been tested before delivery. Basic newborn screening is also done in the hospital before discharge. All vaccination for kids up to two years are done free of cost to expat babies born in Oman.
