Networking and socializing are key in Istanbul, a city teeming with opportunities for business, work, or social connections. As an expat in this vast and vibrant city, you have various avenues to expand your network. From specialized expat forums like Expat.com to local networking events, Istanbul offers plenty of ways to meet new people and grow your social circle.

Online networking in Istanbul

Your interests will define where you should start building your network. While some people are looking to do business only, others are trying to socialize and adapt to their new environment. LinkedIn and Facebook are ideal places to look for people with similar interests. On Facebook, you can find groups of expats and other like-minded people in Istanbul.

Expat.com stands out as a vibrant online hub, particularly for expats in Istanbul. The website frequently updates its community with a variety of events happening across the city, ranging from casual meetups at Istanbul's trendy spots to more specific interest-based gatherings. Whether you're a parent looking to connect with other expat families, an outdoor enthusiast eager to find hiking or running buddies, or just someone looking to expand your social circle, Expat.com's forum is an excellent place to start.

Groups and organizations in Istanbul

Non-profit groups like International Women of Istanbul, also known as IWI, are another excellent way for networking. It provides a support network for foreign women in Istanbul, including professionals and entrepreneurs. The organization also hosts two charity events and holds activities such as art gallery tours, cultural tours, seminars, brunches, etc.

Networking is quite easy for international students in Istanbul, thanks to the many groups, events and meetups. Istanbul&I, for example, is a popular international student group. Besides empowering students, they also organize seminars and talks in Turkish, English, French and Spanish.

Museums and festivals in Istanbul

Museums are other interesting places for socializing in Istanbul. Most people visit museums during opening nights. Istanbul Modern and Pera Museum exhibition openings are trendy among expats. It is recommended to check out their websites regularly or subscribe to their newsletter to track the activities.

Art weeks are also very suitable places to meet new people. Many art lovers, especially expats, get together to have a drink and talk about art. These are generally taking place in September during the Istanbul Biennial. Held simultaneously with the biennial, the Contemporary Istanbul Art Fair is one of the most awaited events in Istanbul.

Good to know:

Turkish people are friendly and easy to make friends with, whether at bars or restaurants. While many of them speak English, it is recommended that you learn Turkish before moving. At least showing that you are trying to speak Turkish is a sure step in the right direction.

Turkish art and culture in Istanbul

Turkish contemporary art is the new face of Turkish culture. Many contemporary art galleries invite expats to their openings. Many expat bloggers also get together and organize talks in art galleries. Here are some popular art galleries you should watch out for:

Pilot Gallery: Located in Taksim (Sıraselviler Street), Pilot is an established art gallery hosting both young and established artists' exhibitions each month. The owners are very open to expat gatherings.

Mixer Art Gallery: Mixer is located in the historical Karaköy's Juma building. The building is home to four other art galleries, namely, Gallery Nev, X-ist, Art Sümer, and Pi Art Works (which also has a branch in London). Mixer Art Gallery always hosts joint shows of young artists. It is easy to meet new people in the openings.

Versus Art Project: Located in the heart of İstiklal Street, Versus Art Project organizes talks for artists and art lovers. Finding newcomers during the events is easy.
