San Francisco is one of the world's most beautiful cities with a lot of tourist and recreational sites and activities. Even if you're initially moving to San Francisco for work, there are so many ways in which you can relax and enjoy your free time, whether alone, with friends or with your family. Expat.com has compiled a non-exhaustive list of leisure activities you can indulge in to escape the bustling city life.

Things to do on your own in San Francisco

If you have just moved to San Francisco, one of the most iconic things to do is ride the cable cars. After your ride, visit the Cable Car Museum to learn about their history. It's a fascinating place to explore.

Another good solo activity is a visit to Madame Tussauds. After meeting celebrities in wax, take a short walk to Fisherman's Wharf and enjoy some delicious clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl.

Make the most of SF's city bike rental programs and rent yourself a bike. Along your biking route, consider stopping at the famous Painted Ladies, a row of colourful Victorian houses near Alamo Square Park. It's a great spot for photos.

Things to do with friends in San Francisco

It's a classic, but why not walk the Golden Gate Bridge with a bunch of friends. Continue your day by exploring the nearby Presidio and enjoy a picnic in the park with scenic views of the bridge.

Biking around the city can also be a great thing to do with friends. Take a pit stop at Golden Gate Park and explore its many attractions, such as the Japanese Tea Garden or the Conservatory of Flowers.

Head to the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park with your friends. It's a fascinating place with an aquarium, planetarium, and rainforest exhibit. If you like museums, San Francisco has a whole range of arts and science museums to explore.

If you're looking for something more low key, watching some live music, visiting cafes, and exploring the vintage boutiques of Haight Ashbury can also be a blast.

Having fun with your family in San Francisco

If you're a parent, get your kids to the Children's Creativity Museum. After a fun day at the museum, have a family picnic at Yerba Buena Gardens, a nearby green space with beautiful gardens and a playground.

Another option is a visit to the San Francisco Zoo. Spend quality time with your family at this iconic menagerie, where you can see a wide variety of animals and even enjoy a mini-train ride.

Consider a family boat tour around San Francisco Bay, where you can get close-up views of Alcatraz Island and the city's skyline while learning about the area's history.

Other attractions in San Francisco you can visit with your family are the Bay Area Discovery Museum or the Walt Disney Family Museum. You should also consider a bay cruise or taking a water taxi. And don't forget to take a trip to Chinatown or visit the Golden Gate Park!
