The Magic City could also be called Sun City, courtesy of the tropical weather, lush biosphere, and gorgeous beaches. If you're from a more wintry area, the first few months in Miami can feel like a permanent holiday. Although Miami is bustling year-round, summer is always an exciting time to be in Miami, and there are lots of outdoor natural activities you can do.

Many people visit Miami for the nightlife, shopping, and restaurants, but there are also some more natural and adventurous things you can do. Here's a collection of outdoor activities for expats in Miami.

Take an Art Deco cycle trip in Miami

Biking along the iconic Ocean Drive allows for exploration of Art Deco architecture and stunning coastal views, with bike rentals starting at approximately $10 to $15 per hour. Biking is a lovely way to explore in the summer, and the breezy feeling of being on a bike can keep you cool in Miami's humid climate.

Paddleboard in Biscayne Bay in Miami

Another exciting option is stand-up paddleboarding (SUPing) in the tranquil waters of Biscayne Bay, which provides you with a workout and amazing skyline views. SUP rentals are available at various waterfront locations if you don't have your own.

Paddle in the Oleta River in Miami

Nature enthusiasts can explore the mangrove forests and waterways of Oleta River State Park through kayaking, with kayak rentals available within the park. Cruising the river, you will get a beautiful view of the wildlife and amazing tropical biosphere.

Tour the Everglades National Park in Miami

Florida's famous Everglades are a must-see. This vast subtropical wilderness offers opportunities to observe wildlife such as alligators, birds, and turtles in their natural habitats. Guided airboat tours provide a thrilling way to navigate the marshes and spot these creatures up close. Additionally, hiking trails and boardwalks offer a chance to immerse in the beauty of the Everglades while learning about its delicate ecosystem.

Try yoga in Miami

If you're a yoga fan or looking to try something new, there are free yoga events around Miami, as well as studios where you will pay a fee for a class. At Bayfront Park, you can join a casual yoga group on weekdays. A quick internet search will reveal lots of other studios and events.

Indoor rock climbing in Miami

An indoor activity with an outdoor feel – indoor climbing and bouldering is a popular option for climbing enthusiasts in Miami due to the region's lack of natural rock formations. Bouldering involves climbing short, challenging routes without the use of ropes, typically on artificial climbing walls. There are several indoor bouldering gyms in Miami that provide climbers with the opportunity to practice their skills and enjoy a fun and social climbing environment. One such facility is the Coral Cliffs climbing gym, but there are other options too. You can sign up for a class or just go and get your hands dirty.

Picnics and gardens in Miami

There are lots of botanical gardens you can visit if you need a picnic or a place to relax. Miami offers a variety of picturesque gardens, parks, and outdoor spaces perfect for picnics and leisurely strolls. One notable destination is the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, a historic estate with stunning Italian-inspired gardens overlooking Biscayne Bay. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden showcases diverse plant collections in a lush setting. For a more urban experience, Bayfront Park offers waterfront views, open spaces, and regular events. Families can enjoy Matheson Hammock Park with its calm lagoon and beach. Many of these spots are ideal for picnicking, allowing residents and visitors to relax and slow down a little. Sometimes, the beach can be extremely hot and busy, and it's good to remember there are other outdoor activities you can do.
