Melbourne's popularity with international students and expatriates is proven. However, its relatively remote location with the rest of the world means that developing a social network is of the utmost importance.

There are many opportunities to network; many social networking events are held in Melbourne and anyone can attend. Not to mention the cultural variety of Melbourne's neighborhoods where you can enjoy a traditional meal and reconnect with your local culture, if you are feeling homesick.

A few popular sites can help you develop your social network and participate in interesting events and activities. Meetup, for example, is a site that allows you to join a local group and meet people; you can try a new activity or simply choose one you already enjoy. They have a variety of events for all types of groups, such as speed networking, Christian singles networking under 35 or foreign friend groups in Melbourne. Search by your interests or hobbies, and for example you can join groups for photographers, hikers, or foodies.

Also check out Eventbrite, a very informative website, to keep up with interesting events in your city. You'll find singles socials, BBQ and jam nights, speed networking and professional networking in Melbourne events.

Social networking in Melbourne

The growth of social networking means that one of the most effective ways to meet people is online. Facebook remains Australia's most popular social network in 2022, with about two-thirds of Australians using it regularly, about half of whom use the platform daily.

Facebook is fantastic for social networking and is much like the sites mentioned above, you can search by interests and suburbs.

For example, there is a Melbourne vegan group, a "West knows best" group (i.e. popular with those living in the western parts of Melbourne), or a group for plant lovers. These types of groups are great for connecting with various people, communicating online and keeping up to date with current social events related to your various interests. Also, Facebook groups are usually regulated by admins so any inappropriate behavior will be reported and the person will be banned from the group.

Although Tinder and Bumble are perceived primarily as romantic dating apps, they can be a very useful social networking tool for some. The key to making sure your profile attracts the right people is to be direct and honest. If you mention that you've recently moved in and are looking to make new friends, you may run into people in the same situation as you.

Sign up for an activity in Melbourne

Another great way to meet people and expand your network is to sign up for a class or activity. These can be yoga classes, art classes, singing lessons, pottery lessons or even live nude drawing workshops. Be adventurous and don't be afraid to put yourself out there, reach out to whatever you like to meet people who are compatible with you.

Melbourne is a city overflowing with expats, so sooner or later you will meet people. Besides, the locals are friendly and always welcoming to newcomers who choose to settle in their beautiful city. Finally, you can develop your social network in your place of work, education, and even through your circle of friends. Stay open and enthusiastic and you will be able to make many friends.
