I am interested in applying for the Self sufficiency residency as an EU citizen. I am trying to understand how this application process works. Does all the paperwork get submitted and then if you are approved you get issued a residents card? Is ...

Also after 5 years your residency card will expire and you need to go through the process again. Read More

Self sufficiency would not apply as she is working in Malta for a foreign client. If she is bringing her South African earnings into Malta to live on then she will need to pay taxes in Malta. Read More

importing a car from UK post Brexit by dennisp99

I appreciate that there is a separate thread currently doing the rounds on importing a car but that relates to a left hand drive car from another EU country and I don't want to piggy back on that. I am hoping to get residency in the fairly ...

Even if you have owned the car or bike for over 2 years and are moving your residence to malta, the excise duty is still calculated based in their value and you don't have to to pay that until you sell. When you eventually sell, even if 20 ... Read More

Minimum tax 5000 eur for non-dom residents by Pejass

A non-dom ordinary resident is in general only taxed on income remitted to Malta. The exception is a lump sum of 5000 eur if the worldwide income is 35,000+ eur. Zero tax if less than 35k income. How exactly is the worldwide income calculated? Do ...

timcob

Capital gains is not included in the 35k income. If you are remitting the rental income to malta and claiming relief of taxes based on the double taxation agreement then this tax counts towards the 5000 minimum. Details on the maltese government ... Read More

This is the detail that many do not realize. When you get the exemption you will get a letter with the amount exempted. This is often more than half of the value of the car and often over 10 thousand. Then if you keep it until its only worth less ... Read More

You will not get insurance in Malta without a EU drivers license. If you eventually sell the car in Malta, you must pay whatever you saved in registration tax when you first brought the car in, even if this amount is far greater than the value of ... Read More

If you are planning on driving back and forth to mainland europe via the ferry then a LHD car is ideal. I have a larger LHD car and a small RHD for Malta. The way the maltese roads are built it really makes no difference between RHD and LHD. I ... Read More

Dear Friends, What is the recommended route to drive a car from the UK to Malta? and, what are the hidden costs? Best regards Chris and Rachel

I did the Salerno to Malta trip last November. It is more like a cargo ship with a few cabins while the GNV boat from Genoa is more like a cruise ship. Its cheaper but you have to factor in the cost of the trip down through Italy. You do save the ... Read More
