We are living in Maine. ( the Northeast top of the US ). I have been fortunate to travel extensively, although I have not been to Ecuador. I am retired and am now designing jewelry. My husband is retiring soon and will like me delve into some other full time " hobby". Our adequate retirement fund,as well as our businesses suffered greatly in 2007/8, so affordability is now high on our list. I did spend time investigating Central and SouthAmerican countries. Our needs are relative safety, availability of decent healthcare, friendly population and of course affordability ( not necessarily in that order ). We plan a 1month stay to see if Ecuador can be our home.
