Introduction
In June, 2008, we moved to Gurgaon, just outside Delhi. In July, 2007, my family consisting of me, one 13 year-old son, a Siamese cat and a Greyhound left everything behind in the States to move to Calcutta (Kolkata), India. This is our story of how we got here and how we are faring under culture clashes, climate change, and the challenge of finding kitty litter.

Expat experience
Currently working at iPlace USA, as US company providing sourcing and recruiting services for US companies and staffing firms.
Cleaner, less smog, friendlier, more cosmopolitan due to lots of international students in the city. Traffic better controlled due to support from army base. Location also in close proximity to many of the Ghats hill stations and Shivaji forts along the Konkan coast. Three hours drive to Mumbai and about 8 to Goa.
"Maharashtra for Maharashtrans Only". Have been forced to move due to negative attitudes toward foreigners of any type, people from other states and other "undesirables", such as "bachelors", who cannot find housing in the city. Difficult to get direct flights from Pune to places outside India unless willing to travel to Mumbai or Delhi. Luckily, Mumbai is a three hour drive from Pune.

Massive smog, massive urban density, traffic jams that are completely out of control. Cops are only there to protect the political figures and not you. Not a place to be out alone at night as a woman. Be sure you trust your driver.

More room, better work opportunities, many more expats and expat groups to interact with.
Smog, lack of water and electricity, road chaos, weather - too damp, cold and foggy during winter, then extremely hot and dry during summer. No planning for monsoon rains, causing tremendous traffic jams.
