Being an expat spouse, it won't come as a surprise to you that my story is closely woven in with my Husband's. We met in the Summer of our first year at Loughborough University in England. Fast forward to graduation and our entry into "real life" and I started working at Lloyd's of London in underwriting and my Husband found himself on a fantastic graduate scheme. A few years into our careers and we became aware of this opportunity to join a roller-coaster ride of my Husband moving to a new job role and country every two years; we talked about it incessantly. To add to the dramatic nature of this role, we don't have any control over where we are sent to by his employer. I was initially hesitant about the idea as I am at my happiest around my home, friends and family; it had never even crossed my mind to live in a different country. Nevertheless, I knew this was a huge opportunity for us both and we decided he should apply. I know my Husband is destined for great things so it was with no surprise that his application was successful and we have so far lived in Almaty (Kazakhstan), Paris (France) and Vancouver (Canada) I took a chance and did something far outside my comfort zone and I can tell you that it was best decision I have made in my life.
