When I went to look for daycare in Toronto, I was often told that the waiting list is about 2 years long (for an 18 month old ...
I have a Ph.D. in one of the medical science areas. My husband and I are finding the conditions for raising a family in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) unbearable. The cost of daycare is high. The houses an average family can afford are below reasonable living standards, many with bad basements, full of mold issues, not in a very good area and the smog generated by the constantly stalled traffic is a health hazard. So, we moved to the suburbs, only to be stuck in that traffic. I commute 90 min to work not because of distance (30 min distance), but because of traffic. I am paid less than the cleaning staff in the hospitals, because researchers are not unionized. I was always an optimistic, outgoing and happy person, but now I feel like I am stretched to the breaking point. It's time to get out of here. http://outofthebigcity.blogspot.com/2010/08/out-to-suburbs.html
