My beau is Dominican
I am a female.
I joined expat.com on 15 January 2018.
My boyfriend is from this area and we have discussed living there if we move back to DR, which he has expressed is his goal in the next 10 years or so. I have experience living overseas in Hawaii and Guam and loved island life. I am not a materialistic person and believe that I would be perfectly happy living a simple life down there. We are unofficially engaged to be married.
From what I know by immersing with his family, is that Dominicans are a very loving yet no non-sense people and I can really appreciate that. The island is beautiful and the food is out of this world. It is close enough to the U.S. to make trips home to visit.
I haven't been there yet, but I am concerned about increasing levels of crime. It is happening all over the globe thanks to right wing world leaders like Trump making life more difficult for poor people while glorifying wealth and materialism. That is really my only concern. And.... I don't really miss living with cockroches, etc. which is just part of island life.
I was born and raised in the Los Angeles area, joined the Navy and lived in Guam and Hawaii for a total of 6 years, then moved to Oregon in 2004. I have always wanted to expatriate from the U.S. and had fantasies of moving to Canada when I was in high school. I don't like America's culture of gluttony, greed, and 'bigger is better'. It's repulsive.
America's protected lands are absolutely beautiful. I especially love the desert climates and beaches.
In general, the people. American's are rude and self-entitled. Being raised in a blue collar family in a very wealthy part of California put me right in the middle of that mentality and behavior out the gate. It is abhorrent to my soul.
