After an absence of about 15 years (I grew up in this city), I returned to work as an independent translator and to take up some graduate courses in translation studies. I was able to spend significant time with family members and some old friends, and make new friends. I took an 8-month course on broadcasting, which I enjoyed immensely. I rediscovered the pleasure of walking everywhere in downtown Córdoba, local dishes (like empanadas árabes and alfajores) and nice eateries.
Having been raised in the city, I was very familiar with downtown and many surrounding neighborhoods. The dollar/peso exchange was very favorable to me at the time. I was able to rent a studio apartment in downtown for the equivalent of 160 dollars a month, and get a nice steak and salad dinner for seven dollars. Sauntering and walking late at night felt safe and comfortable. Then again, I have lived in the city for decades before and Spanish is my first mother tongue, so I was not a tourist in any sense of the word.
Public transportation had suffered and felt much less consistent in this period of time. Instead of taking buses or trolleys, I relied on local taxis.
