I am a native New Yorker. I've always wanted to spend some time abroad, and am finally going to do it! I plan on relocating to Italy (or France....but considering other options) in early 2012, with my two children. I am absorbing all expat information I can get my hands on like a sponge and would love some input/advice from experienced expats (esp those with children)!

There are so many options. There are so many schools to choose from that you can truly find a school that "fits" your child. You can experience a myriad of cultures. With the transit system of NYC being what it is, you don't have to own a car to get around, and in many cases you may not have to leave your neighborhood at all for the neccessities - it is simply a matter of choice. There are green markets, and health food stores, a huge vegetarian and vegan community. There are more parenting communities to choose from than I could ever actively articipate in.
The cost of living is insane! Space is a rare commodity and most families living in apartments/houses that don't quite meet the neeeds of their family. Renting storage spaces to accomodate possessions that don't fit our homes is commonplace. Child care and quality education is far too expensive, and often puts children from middle class and low income families at a disadvantage.
