Exploration
History, food.
Being ripped off, law corruption, insincerity, although decently dressed and covered from head to toe, still treated like a piece of meat.
CI, although stunning is very remote. It's roughly the size of the isle of white, however 70% of it is uninhabitable Jungle. Its a paradise lost and often reminded me of Jurassic park.
Despite being a city girl, I loved my time on this strange island. The locals are friendly and one of the only 5 restaurants on the island makes a wicked Tom yum soup. The nature is what attracts people to the Island, the large land crabs (Robber crabs/Coconut crabs), the red crab migration which is amazing to see, and the whale sharks that hang around are a divers dream. The island is truly beautiful.
There is no public transport and unfortunately a car is a necessity which makes them extortionately priced. Almost nothing is grown locally and so finding fresh food is like finding chickens teeth, the planes bring in the fresh stuff which bumps up the price ten fold, the ship brings in the other stuff but only comes but every 3 months. One taxi on the island, he's a miserable git and finishes work at 10pm, so if you were planning on having a few drinks at one of the 5 bars on island be sure to have alternative transport...... Or take some trainers..... It's a long hilly walk home! ..... One more thing .... The centipedes are armour plated and poisonous and sting indiscriminately.
Living here as a child was amazing, I went to a regular school, made friends with regular Egyptian kids and learnt to speak Arabic super fast.
Although I haven't been back for over 5 years, Egypt will always hold a special place in my heart. From the constant noise to the genuinely friendly people I will always consider it to be a home away from home. Another plus is that I love the food, and miss delectables such as homous hisam, and mahshe wara einab.
The drivers are nuts. Current political state is worrying.
