Düsseldorf is a really nice city to live in. It has the big-city pulse and lifestyle, but the city itself isn't that large. You can walk everywhere, but it is also very easy to get around with the buses, trams, subway and so on. The nightlife is really great. A lot of interesting people to meet, also many expats due to all the different international companies with their headquarters in the city. My favorite "kneipe" is actually not in "Altstadt" (where most of the nightclubs and bars are located), but in Friedrichstadt, a ten minute walk from the main station. Kepler Eck is a cosy place which is open (almost) 24/7. Düsseldorf Alt is recommended, and also very cheap.
Paying with visa card. Most of the places don't accept cards at all, but the ones that do only accept maestro and not credit cards. To me that was a bit problematic. But I quickly learned, that cash is king.
