Well, I have lived a lot abroad and I know the feeling. It is a strange feeling, at times fascinating, at times odd and even heart-breaking...Sometimes has a flavor of loneliness and desperation and some other times it is so utterly "awaking" and consciousness enhancing...I lived in Italy and in England and I have extensively traveled in Spain, France, Switzerland, Netherlands and Belgium.
