Living in the great neighbourhood of Matunga among the locals. Walking to the local market that stocked fruit veg eggs ground coffee nuts craft housewares jewellry pharmacy clothes and cheap eat restaurants. No need to fight the traffic

The muttawah getting sacked while overseas on holiday
Great bus service, freedom of movement as a woman, shopping locally.
Living in a hotel with 4 karaoke bars and fighting for a space in the lift amongst the hoard of prostitutes..lousy accommodation allowance.
Living in Old Town was fabulous as I never had to drive anywhere..shops/pool/pub/restaurants. Watching the world's tallest building going up in my backyard..spectacular
global financial crisis and mass exodus of expats

Living in the capital of Sulawesi fast tracked my language studies as English is not prominant. Relaxed lifestyle and fresh air. Wonderful boat trips out to Samalona Island: snorkelling, sleeping on the beach, eating freshly caught fish on banana leaves with sambal. Easy short flight to Bali
The riots that ensued during the Asian financial crisis and having to flee the country just as I was getting settled.

Discovered Javanese flavours, Iced lemon tea, Constantly warm weather. Language was relatively easy to pick up. Sundanese instrumental music playing in an open air restaurant made of teak.
