@Ian1272 and it can teach the other person a lesson. In this case a conniving Dominican which would be nearly possible. But exposing them for what they are can have a degree of satisfaction.

And let's not sugar cost this. It's not just me who are wary of these people.

They are considered the lowest of low in the Latin American world and it's a well deserved reputation.  To to decent people there I feel sorry that the majority of your countrymen have earned your stereotyped reputation.

Rlwoodz you speak like you have experience here. Then you know playing with people can get you hurt.  Physically emotionally and financially. Desperate people do desperate things.  Again, we don't recommend it.

Let's move on.

Take any statement/suggestion I make and use at your own risk. Yes these people who do this are nasty and they can get you into trouble. So user beware.  Contacts to help you are always advisable.

Sometimes you have to take your losses and walk away with the experience. Not only in DR but anywhere. Scammers are out there in every nation. Beware and cautious always!

@polo1club haha no doubt. However there, as indicated in this thread, is everywhere there and often a family business. Being in close proximity to countries with much higher living standards combined with seedy people on both sides creates this crazy environment.

While in a las Terranas supermarket I talked to an American woman I happened upon.  I told her I'd like to live there to which she said all real estate agents in this town are crooks except one.  It wasn't what she said but how she said it. This woman knows. Very well educated and refined  She and her husband lived and sud business there for 7 years. She was simply telling the honest truth.

Absolutely understand. But to that I say DR is not for everyone as NY or Miami is not for everyone. To me is what you make out the situation. if you make yourself a target then it will be noticed. Sometimes you can't be too nice or someone will jump on that. But like I said DR is not for everyone and everyone should take the time to see any red flags and walk away. Sometimes we want to see things with rosy glasses and that could be a bad thing!

That is true in everything here!  To link back to the topic: keep vigilant. We want it to be real. We want this to be what we have been looking for.  But we must be realistic. We must take a good hard look. We must trust our gut feelings too.

And you are absolutely right - this place is not for everyone!  And that's ok too!
