Hey Jim,
I would like to keep in touch with you and get your takes as a first-time visitor to Thailand. I'm looking to do the same, not retire but very interested in moving to the country one way or another. I had my sights set for Vietnam since I speak French but didn't know about their visa policies.
My name is Jeremie. Good luck on the next steps!!!
Cheers!

@Blackwaternc
What's up Jose!!
Read your post that you would be moving to Thailand at the end of the month. Do you mind of we keep in touch? I'm looking to do the same thing. But I need to find work as well.
Once you're there I'd like to know your initial thoughts. Maybe you can give me some pointers.
I'm not exactly from NYC but I have tons of family there. I lived near Grand Army Plaza/Prospect Park for 15 years. Been bouncing around the states since 2009 at the moment.
Hope your transition goes smoothly!!
Take care,
-Jeremie

There is a difference between reading anything online and real life. It's important to be able to use your own experiences and judgment when making decisions in the real world. And if you're traveling to a new country where you don't speak the language, it's important to be prepared for some challenges. But don't worry, you're sure to figure things out. Just be patient, flexible, and open to new experiences.
@Julien Halo! I have so many unanswered questions I'm actually totally overwhelmed by the weight of all the bumpy ride of unknowns as well as the costs of daily transport to get anywhere. I came to Bangkok for nine weeks staying at Bangkok 68 Hotel in Rachada 54 area. I decided I would like to move here 4 years from now. I'm busy saving up to purchase a used condo in Chiang Mai where it's cheaper and at much higher elevations than the coast. I am a naturalized U S A Citizen from South Africa, and presently I live in Denver Colorado USA .
I really need to connect with expat people to get information about the visa application process , wether I will have enough income officially as I don't yet know the Thai government stipulations. Also, I need more clarification on the running overhead costs of living in an average condo. I will purchase a condo for myself in cash in 4 years and would like to know if a discount can be negotiated for that. I'm not experienced in this field and fear being scammed in certain areas that I lack for knowledge.
I would really like to meet & speak with actual people while I'm here in Bangkok if that could be arranged. I'm really not comfortable with always communicating by email & texting.
Greetings from a future potential expat

Long time living in Thailand full-time.
Just discovered this forum.
Hello Al_in_Bangkok.
Welcome to Expat.com
Would you mind sharing additional information about yourself and your experiences as an expatriate?
How much time you have spent living in Thailand up to this point?
Cheers.

Al is my neighbor here in the RiverView condo in Bangkok.
I suggested that he sign up for the forum, even though he's not keen on social media. So he did.
When I saw Cheryl's post, I called him and read it to him on the phone. He said, and this is a quote, "I came to Thailand 8 years ago to get away from bossy women like that. So far it's been really good here. You can tell that Cheryl, whoever she thinks she is, to go to ...."
And right then, the mobile phone signal broke up. Al was probably suggesting go to get a cup of coffee, but I can't be sure of that. Coffee's really good in Thailand.
Hi, i'm ron, i'm getting ready to make the big move in June of 24. I'm 53. My hobby is renting condos. After the covid eviction moratorium I'm done doing that in the US.
@Julien
Hi, thanks for having me onboard. I am retired and exploring the possibility to spend six months each year in Chiangmai. Looking forward to meeting Forum members. Cheers

Hi, I am a good farang, I travel to thailand mostly for business 3/4 times a year in the industrial area of Si ra cha since 2022.
@a_good_farang
Any job openings for another good falang such as myself? I'm mostly kidding. I only wish i could travel to Thailand 3 or 4 times a year! I do speak Thai a bit. Cheers!
@gsvoboda
hello,
so far not, sorry. I also dont know how long I will travel again, automotive market is shrinking
@a_good_farang
No worries. I work in education. Enjoy your time in Thailand!
Sup guys, British guy moving over to Thailand to start teaching English, but I'm looking at it more as a stepping stone to look for remote work in the UK from there after wards.
Hello my name is Mirko 48 years old. Italian from Rome. I've been to Thailand 7/8 times. I love it. I am now making the decision to quit my job as an employee. I can no longer stand the environment, the way of working and also I had a change of job not provided for in my contract (I will dispute the company). I will have to get fired in order to get unemployment, that is, a monthly income for a few months. Having said that, I started a new online Networker business related to the world of travel a few months ago. This will be my only activity and maybe I could develop a network in Thailand as well. However, the idea would be to move between May and June to koh Samui, where I also have friends and acquaintances who live there.
Hi,
I'm Danny & married to Rachel from the UK. We are looking to work in Chiangmai next year with a project and looking into housing, car, insurance visas etc.
Looking for help.

Hi everyone! My name es Caterina.
I'm Spanish-Swiss living abroad since 13 years around the world.... At present I'm considering to move to Koh Samui for a while. Is it possible to stay longer than permitted as a tourist? I mean by crossing the border regularly or something like that?
@Cater1

Greetings;
My name is Brian I am 50 and I live in Arizona. I moved from NY nearly three years ago. My story is long and complex, but I have a passion for Asia and my heart is leading me to Thailand. I have never been outside of the US but I have traveled extensively within and I am looking for a new adventure. I am making solo plans to visit one of the major central cities next summer. I seem to gather more questions every day and I hope to find my answers here. If the trip next year goes well; I will definitely look into finding a way to move there permanently.
I truly appreciate the efforts and support here.
Be well and good to each other.
B

Hi Everyone,
My name is Mauri, I'm from Finland, currently living in Germany and moving out by the end of this month (Dec -23)
I will likely be moving to the UK with my wife, but we will be travelling extensively the whole of next year, with hopes of visiting Thailand a few times to find out how living there would look - I know, reality is very different than internet research
Based on internet research, Thailand looks like a possible location for us to retire and buy a small property (apartment).
Currently, I am looking for:
- international health insurance options, comprehensive enough for Germany (to get rid of TK), Thailand, Kenya, UK (NHS top-up)
- best locations to buy an apartment in Thailand (close to int. airport, but far enough to have better prices)
My first hope from this forum is to find or establish a comparison table for health insurance options. At least I would like to know what people consider to be the most relevant parameters to compare.
I already noticed some heated discussion threads on this topic - maybe a comparison table could help everyone rely more on facts?
I know comparison tables are not easy, because all providers use very different language in their offering - but I want to try.
Looking forward to join your existing discussions on this topic or to start a new one.
Mauri

Hi, my name is Stephan (or Shorty) and I'm working in Bangkok as Real Estate Property Consultant, helping Expats to find new dream homes for rent or buy, or vice versa, landlords to sell and rent. Living in Thailand for almost 20 years helped me to get a good understanding and experience, which helped many expats to settle down here successfully. Though I'm based in Bangkok, I can also offer services in Pattaya, Hua Hin, Phuket and Koh Samui.
Hi, this thread is very dated. But I will post here anyway. I am new and glad to be here. I will be traveling to Bangkok next month, for the first time ever. I have a worldly traveled friend who is very familiar with Thailand and will be my guide. I am looking forward to a wonderful enlightening trip as I plan for my move in a few years.
