@Julien Hello to one and all at expat.com.
First I'd like to THANK YOU all for your time and effort on this!!!
Here's who I am and why I am interested:
- My wife (we were married in the USA) was born in the DR and while having dual citizenship (before our marriage) also owns a home in the DR.
- While I have visited numerous times over the past 10 years, I am considering citizenship and residing in DR for a greater period of time each year.
- Christian, widowed twice, father of 8, USMC member "Semper Fi" to all my fellow Marines that may be part of the expat.com community!
- Hunter (for food consumption and distribution - for any who are not aware of such programs - check it out THOUSANDS of needy families are provided meat. The distribution programs exist almost Coast-to-Coast in the USA).
- Firearm owner and CCP (Concealed Carry Permit) owner across approximately 38 States.
While some might think "that's way too much info" I'd rather all who might be interested in responding to any of my questions / inquiries know whom they will be helping.
Have a blessed day!
Jeff
Welcome to the forums. Thank you for the introduction as it helps all of us.
You will be welcome to live here I am sure. Citizenship via residency is well worth it for you. You will need to apply for and qualify for gun ownership here and you will have to purchase your firearms here. There is no way around that.
What area are you thinking to live in?
THANK YOU very much for confirming the "but here" rule that I just recently read.
"but here" should have been "but here" - SORRY! (Fat Fingers)
Good Afternoon All,
Name is Louie I go back forth between Colombia and Dominican Republic.
My Family is from DR. Looking to see the different cities and see which one I will end up in.
In Colombia - I'm coffee roaster and have a dental clinic that serves the public and US veterans.
Looking to relax here and expand business here as well.
Moving to the DR before December. I'm so excited! I want to meet more creative or adventurous types of people. I'm also hoping to improve my spanish. I work in international development. This forum has been very helpful and welcoming.
Hello,
My name is Dalmi, I've been living in the DR for a few years now. I've had quit a hard time adapting to the culture and making new friends. I lived in Luxembourg my whole life moved over here with my dominican husband . I would love to meet people that could relate to such a big change of lifestyle that I went through and make some friends.
How hard is it... Moving in a couple weeks.... Scared and nervous.... But looking forward to it
@sofialovestravel welcome. To which town ate you moving? I also work in international development
@LT American I'm thinking puerta plata... What's best do you think
Welcome to the forums. Lots of great info in the various threads for you to revirw
@LT American I'm moving to Santiago... And you?
@DalmiM message me if you like!
@Garydonpemberton There is no "one best place" - it really depends on what you're looking for. Read through all the threads on here about different locations. Some love the energy, hustle, and bustle of Santo Domingo, some love the golf courses in Punta Cana, some love the North Coast, and some, like me and my hubby (RockyM on here), love the beaches and small town of Las Terrenas.
As always let's keep this thread for introductions and welcomes everyone
i am indian citizen but living in Dominican Republic , Santiago .
anyone lives here like to explore this country .
Buenos dias amigos/as!
My name is Damion and I am three years out from moving out of the US to Dominican Republic with my partner who is originally from San Pedro de Macoris.
Although we have not travelled to DR together, we have been doing a lot of research and are pretty sure that we are going to make Jarabacoa our homebase from which to explore the rest of DR.
I saw on a post from a while ago about contacting a gentleman by the name of cruffman to get assistance purchasing a vehicle. I have yet to hear back from him; thus, the purpose of my post.
Does anyone have any other suggestions or recommendations of who I should contact when we move to purchase a reliable used vehicle? The contact does not have to be in and/or around the Jarabacoa area as we are willing to purchase in another location and drive it to Jarabacoa.
I look forward to hearing from you all, to this forum, and to living in DR!
Have a super-fantastic day!
Sincerely,
Damion
Welcome to the forums! So its way way too early to be asking for referrals. The whole place could change in 3 years honey. Things here are definitely not stagnant and move fast. Please keep us posted on your process! Closer to the time I know we will be able to steer you in the right direction!
Than, you for a speedy and honest reply.
Twenty-eight years in the military, I'm a planner.
Looking forward to moving to a country that is fast-changing, yet, laid back and relaxing.
Hee hee hee, me too, a planner!
I understand you will have an adjustment and it will be so good!

Hola,
im Randy from Northern Ontario Canada, I have been a member of this forum for a few years but only just read the threads and learned from everyone that is already residing down there in the DR. With retirement coming I have been looking for a place to call home without the snow and the -30 degree temps six months of the year. I have travelled a little bit and been to Europe and the US and spent a vacation in Jamaica also. But when I first landed in The DR. I just felt so comfortable and relaxed. The people I met have been very nice and always willing to help out. After 38 years of working on the railway from Vancouver to Montreal. I think I have made a good choice in wanting to relocate down to the warmer climate. The people here in this forum have helped me immensely with information, who to contact and so forth. Also some of the locals I have met down there have been so helpful and kind. I am sad to say most of them even though they love their country have a hard time to make ends meet and want to go to the states, Canada and Spain to work and provide for their families. But I did notice they make the best of things and always have a smile for anyone who takes the time to say hola. I have much more to learn and continue daily to practice and learn my Spanish. I look forward to the continued insight of all the members here and hope one day to be meeting some for coffee or a drink.Keep up the great work and information that keeps showing up here in this forum thank you so much Planner for your welcome here.
Welcome to the forums!!!!! Hope we can continue to help. Please share your process and experience along the way!
Hello Everyone, my name is Alan Williams from Texas, I am retired and plan on spending a lot of time in Punta Cana area where I own an apartment on the beach. Thank you for reading my intro post.
@L Alan Williams we are having a place build and it should be ready in spring of 2025 then we too shall spend a lot of time in the PC area. Welcome to the group, lots of good info here and you can use the search feature and pick up good ideas on many subjects.
Hi Everyone
I am new to the forum. Have traveled to DR many times and my hubby and I just purchased a condo in Punta Cana, pre-construction. We live in the US and Plan to use the property for frequent visits and rent it when not in use. The complex offers short term rental management for a fee, but we will weigh all our options when the time comes. I am sure we will have soo many questions throughout this process so I thought I would take the plunge and join a group! We have a couple of years to figure out many of the logistics but its never too soon to start, I am wondering if it is better to purchase appliances and furniture here in the US and ship it over or purchase everything in the DR...... I have been told that the markup on items in the DR is up to 30% and we can get higher quality items in the US for much cheaper. I looked at the cost of shipping a 20ft container by sea and its honestly pretty reasonable....but I'm worried about import taxes... has anyone had any experience shipping things over?
Welcome to the forums. Its never too early to start general research. Import taxes are high unless you are shipping with a residencia exemption. Do a quick search and you will find threads on this. Don't find it, feel free to start a thread whenever you need to!
@Julien
