Hey everyone, I moved to São Paulo this year. I actually joined this forum because I've been having a huge problem trying to get my Canadian driver's license exchanged for a Brazilian CNH. I recently read a success story on here about that so I have a bit of renewed hope.
Oieee i am Shahbaz from Mumbai, india. Recently have married a brazilian and I have baby boy (1yr). I have been working with costa cruises from last 5 yrs in the restaurant. I meet my wife there back in 2019. Have been travelling to Brazil from last 4 yrs through ship.
Soon I will get my RNM and will be living with my wife and my kid in sao Paolo. Gonna start to search for a job in January once I will be back in brazil. Also planning to acquire Brazilian passport after 1 yr. For that I have to leave my Indian passport bcoz my country doesn't allow dual residence ship. If anyone have some information please help me with the same.
Also job regarding any job opportunity. Have plans to open my own restaurant too...
Thanks and all the best to all...
May God help us all and keep us safe👏👏🤲🙌
11/02/23 Welcome, @Shahbaz Shaikh 786!
@Shahbaz Shaikh786 Just a tip, as someone who designed, created and built a state of the art Brazilian Coffee House for $250k in the USA. Nowadays there is a more affordable and profitable way. Many people with your talent create You Tube channels where they showcase their creations. A virtual business will keep you from going into debt. If the idea and sight of having people view and consume your creation in real time then live stream a few choice guests enjoying your creations at a Modern well light kitchen. Just stay away from Leases, lots of restaurant equipment, expensive gas, heat, lighting bills etc.
I say this because the success rate of restaurants are very low and when it closes as most will you will be lucky to get 25c on the dollar for the equipment you invested in.
Yes, I have some great memories, but also very, very large debts that took me many years to get over.

hi all,
I currently live in Jacksonville, Florida. I’m planning to move to Recife in about two years.
I am a retired college professor. I taught economics and economic development.
I was an exchange student to Brazil in 1976-77 (Pindamonhangaba, SP). In 1996, I collected data on the small scale cashew nut industry for my masters thesis in Fortaleza and Rio Grande de Norte.
I’ll be traveling to Recife next year (2024) to check out housing and health care options. Then I plan to make the permanent move in 2025.
@Dr Donna
Any particular reason for the ciry of Recife? Or do you mean the wider Recife area?
11/17/23 @Dr Donna. Welcome! It sounds like you have goals and a plan, as well as language and cultural familiarity, and research skills: an awesome toolkit for success. Any additional insights or information we can help with, that's what we're here for!
@Peter Itamaraca
I’m thinking the city of Recife I have good friends who live there.
@abthree
So far no, but I’m sure as I start solidifying plans I’ll have lots of questions.

Great idea! We (British) have been living on the island of Itamaracá for the past 16 years (it is about an hour north of Recife). If we can help with anything, please do not hesitate to ask... For more info search Itamaraca Tourism.
thank you!!! I definitely will visit the island
Hello, my name is Bill, I am from the US and this is the second time I have been living in Brazil. I am married to Elen who is from Brazil. The first time we lived here was from 2008 to 2012 and now from 2021. I have a CPF, a Permanent Resident card, and a driver's license. I am still in the process of learning Portuguese although I used to be fluent in Spanish. We live in the state of Rio.
We are currently waiting for our household items to ship in from the US (long story since we moved here in 2021 but it is in shipment). A lot has changed since we shipped here in 2008 both in cost of shipping and especially in paying to get it through the port.
I am a Bachelor of Science nurse but have not done the paperwork to transfer that to be able to work as a nurse here in Brazil. I am 60 and have been told that at 62 I can apply for citizenship without the Portuguese language part. Back in 2011 I worked at Wise-up in Recreio, RJ.
I have been to a lot of the state, and city, of Rio as well as parts of Minas, Espirito Santo, Sao Paulo, and Bahia. Wonderful country!
I don't really have any questions but wanted to put myself out there and say hello to fellow expats as well as see if anyone has "words of wisdom" as far as what to know, watch out for, or just to fellowship.
-Bill
11/27/23 @Brazil Bill. Welcome to expat.com! Sounds like you're in good shape wrt documentation. Good luck with the shipment, and completing your settling in.
@Peter Itamaraca
I was thinking to go with some french fires based. As it will be a good cost control option, there will be waste next to nothing. I have set my Target customers. My experience allows me to have a vast range of ideas. However for now this is my no 1 plan.
@Shahbaz Shaikh786

@Cserebogar Thanks mate, I'll do that.
G'day folks! I've been OS +15 years. 10 years in Oz and over five bouncing around the globe. Ready to plant a flag and start a new home in Brasil.
Have been here many times. I've done my market research so to speak. Basing currently out of Floripa.
Will be going through the fun process of getting a visa of some sort. I'll dig through previous posts and aim not to be redundant.
Looking forward to engaging! Cheers 🍻
@GEBMIA Welcome to the Land of This and That! Interestingly enough I went to Miami to get my FBI Background check on the path to a Permanent Residency Visa by Spouse. Had trouble getting back into Brazil! HOW LONG did it take you to get your Permanent Residency Visa?
Roddie in Retirement
@Brazil Bill Hello! I too have storage in the USA. I plan to go there and get it but I cannot go until my Permanent Residency Visa by spouse is approved and they allow me to go to the USA and return to Brazil. About how long did it take you to get yours?
@Shahbaz Shaikh786 What is an RNM?
Roddie in Retirement
I am currently, going through the family reunification process here in canada.
My paperwork was sent in a week ago, for the second time. First time I was missing a few original copies and it was returned to me within 2 days. However, here in Canada you are not able to go into the embassy anymore. Everything is done through e counsel and then the mail.
It would make no difference if my wife was in Canada because they have barred walk-ins and in person interviews. So it seems to be just about the paperwork here.
It costs 150 Canadian for the visa for family reunification and takes 10 business days to process and get back to you.
You have 1 year to enter brazil and then must go to the FP within 90 days. To get my RNM/RNE, residency ID
I tried to do it in Brazil and ran out of time on my visa. Doing it from Canada is a lot more straightforward, as in Brazil we always seemed to need something new each time.
I got my VIPER (which they no longer issue) thru the consulate in Vancouver. My wife was here in Canada, but, that was irrelevant.
As long as your docs are in order, and there are no obvious red flags, going thru the consulate here is the BEST and simplest process IMHO.
Having said that, the consulate had on file some 8+ tourist visas issued over the past 15 years to me, so, I was a known quantity, per say.
@roddiesho
I am trying to remember as it was back in 2008 but it couldn't have taken long since it was issues in 2008 and I arrived in September of that year. However, I was issued a VIPER from the Brazilian consulate in Atlanta so that might of helped to expedite it.
We left to move back to the US in 2012 and my first residency expired in 2018 (after 10 years and I was only back to visit in 2016). I had to reapply in 2021 when we moved back to Brazil and at first I was told I had to start all over. Long story short, when I went back I spoke to another agent and he was super nice and just reinstated the first since everything was the same (same wife, same address, etc) so apart from having to return to the US for the FBI check, etc, (and the new agent basically stated it wasn't needed) the process only took a few weeks (maybe three weeks).
@roddiesho
I will let you know what company I used and how everything turns out from shipping if/when it gets here (as I hear horror stories). I can already hear the port people waiting for me to pay for their Christmas by paying port "taxes" even though I have the exemption for moving to Brazil.
When we came back in 2021 we shipped 22 boxes through the airline itself and I think that still is better than shipping! Although in 2008 I paid a reasonable fee and the company picked up from my address in the US and delivered to my address in Brazil. Ah, the good ole days!!!

Isn't that changing though in Jan. US citizen will need visa.
-@monarchbeach
Welcome! Sorry, I'm not sure what post you are questioning. Yes, a US citizen entering Brazil on or after January 10, 2024 will need to request and receive a Visitor Visa (VIVIS) in the form of e-visa prior to travel through the Brazilian Consulate responsible for their state, unless they already have a still-valid VITEM or VIVIS visa in their passport.
